Sonic's 74 CJ5--build???
 
Well, I have been working on this for a while, but I figured as much as other build posts have inspired me, I thought I would sit and try post a little about what I have done:

When I purchased it, I was told that all I needed to do was replace the fuel to get it running. The PO showed me a few bubbles in the paint and said that there wasn't too many bad spots.

This was kind of true, I got the thing to fire after replacing the starter and solenoid. The problem was that all the gas in the tank and the lines had varnished up!!!

The tank was horrible, so I dropped it and decided to buy a new one...

While I waited for it to ship, I got bored and started investigating in the bubbled paint...

Besides all the rust under the paint, I found that it had probably been in a crash, and there was almost a 1/4 inch of bondo in some parts.

along with the body rust, the floorpan was a lot worse than I thought. I didn't look into the tool box when I purchased it, and their was a huge rust hole. I replaced the middle riser and both bottom side panels with pieces from classic enterprise and I made my own floor with 16 gauge sheet metal and made the ribs out of 1x3 steel tube.

I took the body off and cleaned up the frame a bit.

And I have been working on the body since... although, over the summer I didn't get too much time, too much overtime at work!!!

Blake, I really didn't know what I was getting into when I purchased it, all I knew was that I had a TJ that I built up, then sold, for reasons I don't think are/were relevant (hindsight is always 20/20)... Then decided I wanted a v8 without smog, which brings me to anything before 75... Plus I wanted something I could wrench on a little... It has been a little more work than I had hoped, probably a lot above my skill level, but I have been reading like crazy and pick things up quickly. I am a bit embarrassed to post some of the pics because I don't want people to see how poorly I might have done "this" or "that" but encouragement from you guys (thanks Jim!!!) has been huge for me!!!

Don't be embarrassed! I see "new" people joining JF all the time, with little knowledge, looking for help. Just like me, and maybe you too. If nothing else, then your example can always save someone some work that they shouldn't do. That's the way I had to look at it. Shoot... it only takes once... hmmm... no, TWICE, to get it right! And then you never forget, and soon you will be telling others how to fix something! Keep up the great work. Everybody is watching YOU! :thumbsup:

Wellllll, if I ever get time off, lots of overtime right now (I'm not complaining!!!), I want to throw some more metal at the inside of the tub, then wire wheel it and POR the inside and under side, so that I can get to mounting it. Then I have to fit in the new tank and fuel lines, along with new brake lines, and rear wheel cylinders. Everything else is bolt on stuff... Well, except for exterior bodywork and painting, which I will do with the body on the frame.

The thing that i have been thinking most about, though, is axles! I got the disc setup from a 77 CJ7 that I need to bolt up, but have been putting that off because I have been trying to find more info on putting in WT axles. The plan was 35s, but think I'm going to 37s. I've heard that you can build a Dana 30 to withstand 38s, but a lot of people here say that 35s max them out. Not to mention I will prolly need to add spacers for 37s. You add regearing into the picture and it's starting to sound like WTs are the easiest way to go from the beginning... The other side to it is that I can play with what I have till I break something, then I can upgrade.

I think I will have a few hours on Wednesday to mess with the body a little, but after that, I won't have time till next Wednesday... Lots of overtime coming my way and I can't say no!!!

Blake, thanks for the heads up on the guacho build... Amazing!!! I need to spend a few more hours reading over that!!!

I understand that being busy at work thing. Like you I'm glad to have the work to do!!

If you're going to run 37's I don' think I'd invest allot in the Dana 30. You could get by with them for a while if you don't get too heavy with the foot. I have trouble with that disipline myself. :D

That guacho build is something. I have spent many times looking through his work in awe. He is a craftsman to say the least.
