Smitty Center Console Advice

Anyone running this console, picture below? I want to know:

1. Could I easily take off these plastic cup holders? Do they glue or screw on?

2. Would it be possible for me to cut holes and mount speakers in the back of this box? Preferably stacked top and bottom.

3. What is the general quality of the box, is it waterproof (does the top have a rubber seal)?

Thanks for the input.

I have it and it is a nice console.

1. not sure haven't tried.
2. that shouldn't be a problem. it is pretty heavy gauge steel might be tough to cut a nice hole in.
3. I'm very happy with the quality, very sturdy. No rubber gasket but the lid is lipped over the edge of the box so unless you drive through a car wash it should stay pretty dry inside.

I have the smitty, I like it. I put it in in 2007 to replace a flimsy wooden one the PO had installed. Its nice and sturdy, the finish hasn't chipped off that I've noticed and it is water tight, it spent most of a winter in south dakota with only a bikini top outside and everything stayed dry inside the console.

I'm not sure about taking the cupholders off, I can take a look at mine and see how they are attached. You should be able to mount speakers inside if you cut holes for them (guess it wouldn't be as water tight then).

I would recommend the tuffy as well. Had mine for maybe 12 years or more. Very good, sturdy. The cup holder on it is metal and removable and can be mounted in the front or rear. Looks like it is about the same dimension and it's padded. The cup holder on the tuffy is conveniently the size of a standard can cozzie.

yes the cup holders do come out 2 phillip screws 1 on each cup holder, and i believe theres nuts on the bottom of the screws. its kinda a pain to get out when the console is bolted in lol.

I have both-
The tuffy is constructed better but that's not what the op asked about.
Smitty is a good value for the money. Mine is showing some minor surface rust after a year. The cup holders are a joke. Seatbelt hardware will cut you. Come up with a better solution than what they offer.

question:
#1 yes
#2 yes
#3 better than you would expect for the price

With DVRs review I might as well spring for the Tuffy. No need to bleed more on my jeep.

Too bad you live so far away as I have a black Tuffy center console that I'm looking to get rid of. It's the standard version without the stereo mount.
I'm looking to get the Tuffy with the stereo mount, but have to get rid of this one first.

I have this console and am very happy with it. I have some pictures that might help answer some questions. The Jeep was ridden hard and put away wet though. It's kind of dirty. But that's a good thing, right?

The console will go anywhere you want it. You will drill three holes. What would've been cool is a template. Make one by tracing the holes at the bottom of the box and life will go much smoother.

In the bottom of the cup holder tray are two phillips head screws. As was posted earlier, if you don't want them, remove them before you install the console. Because if you change your mind later you'll need to remove the console.

Yes you could drill holes for speakers. Of course it's going to intrude on your storage. The metal is at least as thick as on an ammo can, maybe even approaching the thickness of the dash.

The box is definitely splashproof as is. I believe there is enough play in the latch mechanism to add some weatherstripping inside the lid so that it comes down on the edge of the walls and you'll be fine. I am verymuch impressed with the overall quality of the box. The vinyl is certainly tear resistant, the hinge is a piano hinge and the locking latch is good (and replaceable) I would buy it again.

Here's a little better picture of the existing weatherstripping on the lid. I would add some more along the bottom so that it squishes when you close the lid.

I'd rather be lost on the trails than found at home!

silentmike - I use a Harbor Freight trailer tongue box behind the rear seat of my CJ7.

I realize you have a 5 but this might be worth a look especially for the price.

The unbelievable we can do immediately . . . the impossible just takes a little longer.
