Simple fuel line questions

Do I need to buy the metal line that runs underneath my jeep if I want to replace it? Or could I just use rubber fuel line all the way back to the tank? Also, i don't like the metal return line that runs down in-between the intake and header, can I eliminate this by running the return line next to the inlet line on the passenger side? I have a Holley fuel pressure regulator and the 258.

They dont recommend running rubber lines under the Jeep due to the simple fact they get damaged easier. As far as the metal return line, I dont blame you for not liking it there. It is a fire hazard just like the fuel filter over the manifold. You can re-route it, but you will have to bend, cut, and re-flare the line.

OK, but I could do it if wanted to. This just reminded me of another question, If I did move the return line, whats the deal with the fuel filter? Can it be mounted in any position? With the two ended side pointed up?

The fuel filter must be mounted with the return line on top. This allows for fuel vapors to escape back to the tank.

Oh.. and the filter must be mounted horizontally... like this: (sorry for the bad ANSI art)

If you plan on using "auto parts store cheap fuel line", plan on replacing it every couple of years.. it rots/cracks fairly quickly.

I used braided SS fuel line and AN fittings for mine. I dont know if that is reccomended or not but its easy using the AN fittings and to me i think the SS braided line is plenty durable for the underside of my jeep. I think i kept the return line in the same location and its still a steel line.
