Shock question
I'm looking to put new shocks on my 84 CJ7 and was wondering if you all had a recommendation on a good on road/off road shock, it would be mainly for off road and I need it to be for a 3" lift, now here is the thing I'm putting my wife through school and $ is tight, as well as I'm thinking about getting some for my father inlaws 76 CJ5 for helping me out with all the repairs/painting I have done on my Jeep he needs the shock for a 3" lift. I was looking at the Black Diamond Shocks, but I haven't read any reviews on them so I was wondering what all of you thought. I'm trying to find something in the range of $35-$40 a shock, and do yall think it would be possible to get a deal if I bought 8 shocks? Thanks for your help.

Bump for Phatty as I too would be interested in a good inexpensive shock for 3" lift. I know ya get what ya pay for but sometimes there really is a good price on a good product, right?

I need shocks and springs too. From my reasearch if you wanna go top notch, Rancho and Skyjacker are the way to go, tad more pricey than some others but excellent quality...

Trailmaster SSV is one of the best bangs for the buck...should run around $42 apiece and they are speed sensitive like Rancho RSX's. I had a pair left over from an earlier build stage and put them on the rear of a guy's CJ-5 over the weekend and he's been raving about the improvement in ride quality (the shocks plus loosening up his spring clamps).

Has anyone had experience with the Black Diamond Shocks? And some one told me that its actually better for rock crawling to get a shock for an inch or 2 more lift than you actually have, is this true? Thanks for the help guys.

You should flex out your suspension then measure what you need at each corner for compressed & extended length, then spend a little time with the chart from a shock catalog to figure out which part number(s) will work best. If you're sticking with an off-the-shelf lift, just go with the manufacturer recommended shock for the given amount of lift.
