Shell ROTELLA T in my Jeep?
Shell ROTELLA T with Triple Protection 15W-40 or Shell ROTELLA 15W-40?
I have an 1981 Jeep CJ7 258 and was wanting to run Shell Rotella T 15W-40 oil. Do I use the standard oil filter? Anything else to be concerned with when using this oil?

I think you want to run shell rotella 15-40, which is diesel oil. Then use the same oil filter.

Use the diesel oil. (15-40). Is the triple protection stuff rated for diesel use? If so, it may be the rumored "new formulation". Rumor has it that ROTELLA is going to be required to change the formulation of the diesel oil to meet upgraded emissions standards.
I'm gonna go down to NAPA and buy as much of the old stuff as I can afford. New and improved. Bah!

So, I changed my oil and used shell rotella T triple protection 15-40. My oil pressure is up a bit and the jeep runs like a dream...

i build diesel engines for a living, ive seen the inside of many many motors and a rotella motor is the cleanest with the least amount of wear. i run it in everything i own including the lawnmower. it will bring your oil press. up a bit but dont worry its normal. and the lowest priced rotella ive seen is at walmart.

Running On Empty...

Actually, either one will work very well from Shell.
I run Rotella or Valvoline 15w40 in my 'Heavy Use' vehicles with VERY GOOD success! The 'Triple Protection' is mostly an advertisement gimmick, The oils both have to meet or exceed SAE standards, and both do that VERY well. (Shell Rotella is the #1 rated oil by the SAE, with Valvoline 15w40 a very close second. You won't have to change anything, and if you need to add a quart or two on the road somewhere (like jeeps don't leak!) it will all mix with regular engine oils you can buy off the shelf anywhere. The oil filter might be of concern when you switch over to Shell Rotella brand... Rotella, and any 15w40, are considered 'Industrial' oils, instead of 'Consumer' oils, so they will have more detergents in them... That means for the first 5,000 to 10,000 miles after you make the switch, you will want to change the oil filter (not the oil, but just the filter) about every 1,000 miles, Since the detergents are going to be stripping a bunch of the crud out of your engine and the filter is going to be the final resting place for that extra crud! The oil you can wait until the usual 3,000 mile interval to change, since it will be depositing the solids into the oil filter, but the filter will need to be changed about every month/1,000 miles for a while! Remember, most of us have engines that have 23+ years of crud built up in them (mine had 35 years!) and the increased detergents are going to remove a bunch of that and deposit it in the filter, so spend the extra $5 a month and change the filter to get it out! You don't have to change the oil any sooner than you normally do, about 3 months or 3,000 miles if you are carb'ed, but the filter will get full QUICKLY when you go over to high detergent! 15w40 oils sustain much higher pressures, slightly higher heat at the rod & main journals, and will carry larger loads of particulates in suspension to the oil filter than the thinner 'Commercial' and 'Light Use' oils will.

Good stuff here.
Checker has a good filter on clearance for the CJ 258, MOBLE ONE filters $4.97 on clearnace a while back. Highly rated filter. Not sure if still on but great deal vs the $11 or more price. The filter and oil tests and posts recently liked this filter just not the high price. Sorry for any confusion with post on Rotella but this goes along well for those reading about the oil. DO NOT USE THE FRAM FILTERS ON THE CJ. |

rotella will clean the carbon buildup out of the motor, yep change the filter every 1000 for at least 5000. and i agree with fjguercio, stay away from fram oil filters.

I guess this is a stupid question, but how would you go about changing your oil filter without changing your oil?
Maybe I'm not thinking strait but wont oil come pouring out of the filter hole once you pull the filter?

How's it gonna clean the carbon out unless you are burning a major amount of oil? The carbon's in the combustion chamber.
