scrambler half hard top question

Does anybody by chance know what size of bolts are used to bolt the hard top to the bulk head on a cj8?

Well, I don't know the thread size...but it takes a 1/2 socket. It's the same bolt that holds the full size hard top on...at least it was in mine.

I have some extra factory hardtop bolts and thread plates if you are interested in the exact setup. I don't know exactly how many, but I know I have some. The bolts aren't anything special (as mentioned above), but the thread plates are rather specific and they will fit correctly under the flange lip.

I have the threaded plates but no bolts came with it. The PO must have messed up the threads or something because 5/16 is too small. 3/8 is too big. 8mm is to small. I can't figure this out

That's quite possible, as I have discovered a number of them that were cross-threaded over the years. That's why I started collecting extras as I found them.

Are you sure that your plates are OEM and not something that the PO made themselves? IIRC, they should have rounded edges on one side?

Yeah they look original to me. I just ended up putting 3/8 screws in! Just drilled em right on up and in and it tightened the top done perfectly.

The OEM pieces in the top are only sheet metal. Once they strip, they won't even hold a heilicoil, I tried. I even moved up to 3/8" bolts, but they stripped out eventually, too. I drilled 1" round holes above where each of the 4 bolts go in the top. Then I fish in a square nut each Fall when I put the top back on. Once a year isn't bad to deal with it.

We're talking about where the top attaches to the bulkhead, not along the top of the windshield. I agree that's a PITA area once the holes get too big. People typically do a latch conversion once it gets too bad.

The bolts that hold the half-cab hardtop to the bulkhead do not thread into sheetmetal. I don't understand what it is that you posted a picture of. The one I had did not have rivets in the roof.

Do you have a pic that is not so close?

I understand that pic. And thats where i was having trouble so i put 3/8 screws in that hole because I couldn't find a bolt, metric or standard to fit.

I think I'm going to do that tomorrow! Drill holes so i can put a nut in there and really snug it down and not worry about the screws working loose or falling out at some point.

I must not be remembering the roof correctly, then. I thought mine bolted to the body vertically with the same fasteners that a CJ-7 roof used - a bolt through a threaded plate which sandwiched the roof flange to the body flange. Where is that hole?
