Well I replaced the water pump and put a new battery in it. It's running pretty well. One of the issues it has is that the driveline shudders when starting in first gear if you don't let the clutch out just right. I'm hoping that it's just the clutch needing to be used.

Could be rust or oil on the flywheel.

'81 Scrambler w/ FI 360 AMC, 33x12.50 BFG M/T's, 5" of lift, ARB'd Dana 44's F & R, Dana 300 clocked & twin sticked w/4:1, Warn XD9000i, etc...

Sounds like you need new bushings for the torque arm. My bolt broke and when I took off the first gear the shifter shook really bad and once it popped me in the wrist on that bone. Hurt like hell.

Looks like there is no torque arm. There is only a transmission mount that attaches the tranny to the crossmember. Maybe I should replace the mount.

Alright folks, the Scrambler passed MA inspection with flying colors. All I had to do was replace the horn.
I put some new rubber on it in the flavor of 4 new 31-10.5-15 General Grabber AT2s. I think it looks great. Drives a lot better too as the new tires have cured the shaking from the old flat spotted ones. I drove it home from NY and averaged 21 MPG in the highway. Had to use 4th the whole time though because 5th is useless; it's still geared at 2.73 with 31's and 5speed.
I think it needs 3.73s or 4.10s. What do you all think?
Also, I need to take care of the bed.
Option 1: Paint the bed to match the body
Option 2: Use black UPOL raptor on the bed
Option 3: Use color-matched UPOL raptor on the bed.
All opinions welcome!

Glad to hear you passed emissions. I'm skeptical about the gas mileage. My 4.0L was topping out at 18 mpg's when it was stock plus I had 5th gear but that's just my own experience.

As far as gearing goes, do you ever plan on going above 31's? If you do get the 4.10's. If you don't 3.73's will be fine. For the bed I'd do black UPOL raptor in case you decide to paint it later on then it won't matter.

Sounds like you don't do a damn thing to the gearing if you're getting 21mpgs. I'm also skeptical - have you got a GPS you can compare it with next road trip?

Did it have bigger tires on previously? If you dropped down to 31s, multiply your speedo miles by 31/x(whatever previous tire size was) to get the actual miles. If you went up in tire size, that implies you got better than 21mpgs (previous tire size/31 x speedo miles).

That is GPS certified 60-65 mph the whole time. The speedo is roughly 10mph off at 65. It shows 55 when I'm doing 65. Around town I've been getting around 17-18 avg. The engine supposedly only has around 6000 miles on it and it sure runs strong. It's just a dog with 2.73s. It runs 1900 RPM at 65 in 4th. That's still pretty low. I'd like to have a nice gearing spread and use the 5th gear and have some sort of crawling in low range.

I think 3.73's would be your best bet. I had 31's and 4.10's for a while with my 4.0L and it was a bit sluggish but was great for crawling.

My next wheeling trip I'm planning on taking a GPS and recording the total number of miles driven then dividing that by the amount of gas I put in it. I can't remember the last time I actually calculated my mileage on my jeep.

Black raptor coating! I'd recommend doing the inside floor and firewall of the cab to, pull the cab divider out also. Just in case you want to take the top and divider off later on, that way it all matches from front to back. I did mine in the Raptor coating about two years ago and love it!





Also, make sure you take a lot of time to prep it right so the coating sticks good.
