Cherokee = XJ. Grand Cherokee = ZJ. I didn't know that either while my mind was wrapped around the CJ!

Scott,
I should be able to look up the wiring at a dealer tomorrow if no one else can help you. So you're looking for 1990 Grand Cherokee?

No Sir... Fallon's (my 13YO) 1990 XJ Laredo (4.0, Auto) has an overhead console. It don't do nuthin! I pulled an OH console from an unknown year Grand Cherokee as they were similar.

I have since discovered that the circuit board in Fal's XJ is fried... beyond repair. Apparently, this was a very common problem in the XJ consoles after 20 years of service. The circuit board in the Grand Cherokee (ZJ) appears to be in good shape. I can find no defects. The ZJ is circa 1997, or thereabouts. I am wondering how to adapt this console to Fallon's 1990 XJ harness, if it can be done by a guy who needs pictures in an action book!

I have a FSM for the 1990 XJ. I will attempt to download a FSM for the ZJ. I will make another trip to the JY to determine the actual year... if the owner hasn't crushed the car!

There could be OBDI and OBDII differences, and I don't know anything about the two systems yet... gotta research it.

I want to wire in this console with compass and temp into the '90. If you can figure out how to do this I will give you Bill's new TJ. Promise.

Scott,

The "thing" you circled in post #431 is the sensor for the key fob alarm. I am fairly certain anyway...

...oh, and Happy New Year!

Mvigo is correct. The key fob for those years was infrared- you had to actually point the remote at the Jeep for that sensor to receive the signal - just like a TV remote. Modern ones are radio signal transmitters, more reliable and easier to use.

OFFICIAL 4.3 Talk!

So what if I bought a complete, running 4.3 with 4X4 tranny? I wouldn't use the T176 or D300 at all, so no adaptors. It would be a complete unit. I haven't checked any lengths yet, so I don't have all the facts together, but from reading Novak's site it looks very doable. Tranny options are 350, 400, 700R, GL60e (my preference). I'm pretty sure I can get a complete drivetrain from an S10 as the JY has a bunch of them. BOUND to be less miles than my planned donor, my wife's Astro van. The wiring is always intimidating, but I found it to not be too difficult when doing Clay's 5. I know this is more, but if, you know, DAVE can do it, I figure I can too!

And no carb. FI all the way.

That's $500 for the whole drivetrain including puter and wiring harness.

So you want a automatic. The TH350 and 400 are 3 speed. No overdrive, or lock up torque converter.
The 700R4 and GL60 are overdrive, with a lock up torque converter, they are also longer.
Then there's the transfer case. If you want to keep the passenger side drop, I'm not up on the all the available options. I do know the NP241 and NP208 can be used. I think with the 400 there are other options, like the 203/205. So you would want to check if those 2 will bolt up to the 700R4 or 60E.
Some of these (203/205) come with the slip yoke eliminator, you WILL need one, ($350)
So once that's worked out, you need a conversion radiator, electric fuel pump, motor mounts, and some way to shift the tranny, either one on the floor ($200) or by changing the steering column

If I was picking a automatic I'd go with a TH700r4 for the reason of being a non electronic tranny . The newer models (4l60 and GL) are electronic.
The 350 and 400 may be a little shorter in length, but depending on axle ratio, may be undesirable at hi-way speeds (think higher RPM's)

O, add in a double cardan rear drive shaft , and a new front DS.

Bill

Dang! Forgot about the DS drop!! I read on JP magazine about a guy who used a 231 Tcase, but I need to see what the JY owner has available. Since I am going to be MPI it wouldn't be a problem for the GL60e. I need a computer anyways. I have a DC from an XJ front(?). I can lengthen/shorten that. It also looks like S10 motor mounts will work, but we can make those if necessary. SYE, I need to research. I don't even know what it is!
