Okefenokee in the morning. Home of over 12,000 aligators. No boats over 10 HP. No small pets allowed in boats. No arms or legs allowed over the side of the boat. No swimming! Wifey askes if I want to take a stringer? Really?? I can't have a small pet in the boat, and you ask if I want to take a stringer? Now she is asking how many canoes to take...

12,000 Gators + 1 Canoe= the Kerr clan walking (running) on water.

I think I would rather take my chances in the Atlantic in a canoe under a red flag. :-)

If you make it to Tybee, you can rent a 6 person golf cart. Haha, let Beth drive! Vicki was our DD. also while in Savana, for lunch, we went to a small brewery. Good food, get the 7 beer sampler.
Have a great vacation ya'll .

Thinking about taking the golf cart.... and bicycles, and firewood, and canoes, and RC plane, and RC chopper, and fire ring, and... and... all I want to do is fish! Gotta find me a suitable stringer, maybe 1/2" nylon line about 50' long!

I promised ya'll some pics. We came back with over 500 of them! I picked out about 50!!! So.... it's a little redundant, but I want you guys to feel it. This is Stephen C. Foster State Park near Fargo, Ga. This is the Okefenokee Swamp, the headwaters for the Suwannee River. The park is 400,000 acres of canals and backwater that are just beyond description. Hence, the pics. The park has several cottages that are quite nice. We rented a 2 bedroom unit that slept 6, $125 per night. It had a full kitchen, family room, and flat screen. Cell coverage was very spotty. Deer, turkey, coons, hawks, snakes, etc, were all over the place. Oh yeah, and gators! It would be so cool to see CJs parked at all the cottages for a CJ weekend. Pman... if you catch this, I finally had the chance to see your "home"! Boat rentals were readily available... all day for $85. The boats were powered by a four-stroke 6.0 HP Mercury, which is a dog, but would go all day long. All the gas you could burn was included in the rental. We took two canoes with us, but you quickly find that there is just so much to see and explore that you need a power boat. The park limits all outboards to no more than 10.0 HP. Bummer! Because I sure would like to really ride those channels! The aluminum boats are all bashed in at the front! And when you travel down the backwater corridors you will see lots of trees that have been damaged by boats. The channels wind through them, and plenty of rookies have hit the trees. Three of my boys marked trees, and I teased them pretty hard. But then I high-centered my boat, and I guess I beat them! I had to be rescued!! Here are the pics. I hope you like them.

These are the boys in the truck on the way over to the park. It was only 1 1/2 hours to the park.

View from the front of the cottage.

The backyard...

Deer in the park.

Park entrance from the water.

Park Marina.

On our way... first day.

Gators are everywhere, and they aren't scared! We didn't see anything over 8'. They did not bother us except to try and get our fish as we reeled them in.

God's creations, and it's just beautiful.

Rain was spotty and we got caught a couple of times. Lightning popping close enough to feel the current, and the boom of thunder peeling across the swamp was some kind of awesome!

This is a canoe resting station out in the swamp.

Port-a-john!

So after a day of canoeing I decided to get a boat. It was much easier!

But I didn't get much tiller time!

So, I just relaxed!

Continued....

More backwater channels.

The younger boys got into the fish pretty quickly.

The gators would come up to the boat to try and grab a fish before you could get it inside. If they were quick enough they got a free meal!

More backwater...

I ended up getting a second boat for the older boys.

And then Cammie kept begging me to take him to The Narrows. The fishing was supposed to be good down there. The Fed rangers are supposed to be keeping the Narrows clear, but they obviously hadn't been down here in awhile! I hit this submerged log and high-centered my boat. I had the little guys with me, and they got a little freaky!

I had to get out of the boat to pull it off the log. They thought I was going to get eaten!

Back in the boat! We had to hurry because the current was swift. We had to turn the boat around and try to paddle out.

Cammie holding onto a branch to keep us in place.

Rescued by Wifey and The Big Boys!

Dragging us out of the hole.

Safely at Mixon's Landing I used my pliers to bend the prop back. It was in bad shape!

After the end of the day we went to The Sill. This is a dam that separates the Okefenokee and the Suwannee. Rumor was that the catfish were thick as Deerflies! But it started to rain!

Mom tried to cast my baitcaster!

The wildlife is used to people, and the rain didn't bother them much.

And a last pic to go away with. This is a gator at The Sill.

I hope ya'll don't mind the abundance of pics. It was a wonderful trip, and it is so close to our house. We will be going back soon, and I intend to build a skiff that will go "faster" with 10 horses. If you like this kind of environment you need to go down to the park. We were the only ones there until Friday.

I've done a t of miles in canoes, but never in gator country! I don't know if I would have had the stones to exit the boat. When I was a kid I had a big picture book about the Okeefenokee, and your pictures are better! Looks like a good time Scott. Glad you were able to enjoy that with the boys, AND make it back in one piece!

Great trip Scott! After seeing all those gators I bet you were in and out the water pretty quick. What kind of fish are those with the rounded rear tail fins?
