Sam traded for a CJ5 and I'm gonna be in the dog house!(Turning into a slow build)

If any of you have seen some of my posts my oldest son Sam helps me a ton when we are doing any project.
He traded is old ATV for a 1979 CJ5 (same as mine). A freind of ours took Sam to pick it up today and look it over for me as I am traveling for work all week.

The engine runs well, but the rear is broken. The guy gave us a complete rear and front axles the replace them with. I also have a dana 44 to build and stick in there if I want (THANKS SCOTT!!).

It looks to be a T150 and Dana 20 behind the 258.
Sam found the owners manual and stuff in the glove box.

It has WAYYY to much lift on it and that will go.
It has some of the usual PO hacks on it, but it is mostly complete and we want to have it purfect when he turns 16 (he is 12 now).
The new Bestop Supertop is going on my 5 for a while and my ACME will go on his.
Enough of my BS here are some crappy phone pics that Sam sent me.

Jeff

Hmm, another set of Alcoas!
Why would you spread this disorder to your unsuspecting child?

Awesome! I loved working on old vehicles with mu Dad when I was young. My first car was supposed to be a straight 6 '67 Camaro RS. Ran outta $ and I ended up with a 2wd '86 S-10 that I blew up before I could lower. It was a phase, haha. Shortly after I got back on the right track and was in a '78 CJ5.

Have fun. He'll love the time with you I'm sure.

In early on this thread!

I'm looking forward to this turning into a build/refurb thread, especially after seeing the great work you did on your '5!

Thanks!
It will be a slow build I want everything to be correct before I let him drive it.
He wants a crimson metallic paint job with tan top and seats.
I'm gonna build a cage and try to make it as safe as possible.

You have not really said what the wife's hangup about the Jeep is. For me to earn a beating from the wife it would have to be something like shaving the cat down so I can play Dr.Evil,or saying her sister looked hot today.A father son project jeep would be awesome. My little guy helped me sand down the body so I could paint it.(he was 4 at the time and did a great job block sanding.)(better than his mother)
I hope to do the same with him when he gets close to driving age.
If the father/son thing doesn't work tell the wife you can take him to the strip club .
EARN YOUR BEATINGS!!!!!!!

That's funny!

She is mostly good about things, but she knows this will be a long and expensive project. She will warm up to it in time.

Congrats on your son Sam's first Jeep CJ.

My first Jeep - '78 CJ5 - was Sand Tan. Your son's 5 looks like that color.

Good luck with the 5!

MY 7 & 11 yo's are always on board for helping me on the Bikes/Boat/Jeep and routine Maint on the DD's. This is their second lawn mowing season for cash for go-cart parts. They are already divvy-ing up my bikes and guns!
At least now you have 4 years worth of B-Day & X-mas gift ideas. And have the relatives get him Pay-Pal & whatever vendor you use Gift certs!
I'm w/243 on the V8. Any V8 w/a rev limiter, of course. Hell a 304 rumbling, and 33's was the only thing that got my acne covered face any dates. Sure as hell wasn't my charm!
BTW, Congrats on raising a kid who doesn't "expect" a New 'Stang/Camaro/'Vette when he turns 16. You're doin' something right! Be very proud.
