safetly mounting d-rings on custom front bumper
i have 5/8 d-ring and the are hung on solid 1x2 stock through a 1/4" fab bumper.
how many bolts would be enough for general use on the trails and still avoiding ripping you frame apart? pics would be cool but any input welcome

Depends on the D-rings but 2 can work I would go for 4 grade 8 bolts with a backing plate installed if you can install it behind the D-rings. If you cant get in there you can drill through install some sleeves so you don't crush anything from the rear of the bumper and install a backing plate there. Make sure the front is just big enough to put the bolt through. Just be sure you paint all the bare metal with a good paint. If you have a welder or access to one weld them on.

my d-ring mounts pass through the bumper like that but i made only one hole to mount, i think i will run some angle dowm the out side of the frame to sister it up. keep in mind i'm using only grinders, torch, drills, and welding machine no machine tools |

Thanks for the positive responses. I'm not trying to hijack your thread, I just thought that what I did might provide some inspiration for you. I know that most guys don't have access to the shop I do, but the only three tools I used at work were a milling machine (for the mounts), a bandsaw (for the bumper parts), and of course the Millermatic 250 to put everything together. Eventually when I get it all done I'll post a thread about it, not to blow my own horn, but to provide inspiration for other guys when they fab theri own stuff.

The bumper is 6" X 3" X 3/16" Hot-Rolled-Steel. The reciever is 2-1/2" square tube, also HRS. The bumper mounts I made of solid pieces of HRS. I had to machine them with the notches and chamfers so they would fit in the frame rails. I sandblasted everthing so it would be clean when I welded it.

i have used with consistent good luck the weld-on D rings. then to stop any rattle, squirt in some black silicone and presto, silence. Of course, a weld-on D ring needs something to weld to and a cross member is not it. well done on the integrated bumper and you added the best of all, a front receiver. those are priceless, especially moving around trailers.
