rough idle in gear

Just got done putting a new cam in my 76 304. I got fustrated trying to tune in the carb because the jeep would die or have a very low idle when I put it in gear, or so I thought it was the carb. After taking it to my mechanic I was told the new mild cam was causing it to run rough when I put into gear. My question is: is there anything I can do to make it keep running better than it is now when put into gear without having to crank the idle up.
