ring and pinion woes (REFINED)
okay so my in my last thread there was a lot of confusion so im going to re do this

ok my dana 30 in my 80 cj the pinion bearings went out causing then ring and pinion to eat each other alive

i got a used ring and pinion off of ebay the description said dana 30 ring and pinion 3.55 gear ratio (LONG pinion) so i ordered it

both the same length look a little different in the mid section

bought the correct bearings (same numbers as the old ones)
the inner looks like it will go on fine havent pressed it on yet
the outer tho

where the outer bearing seats is a couple thousands different that the old (bigger)

Measures 1.129

Measures 1.190

there are some numbers on both of them

i need to know what pinion i have?
i need to know what outer bearing i need?
will this pinion work?

Dana's website shows part #44226 as a pinion no longer made. Their application that shows where it was originally used turns up nothing.

It's odd that the tooth counts are not the same. They should be. Have you compared the ring gear to the existing ring gear to make sure that the diameter is the same and the crown heighth is the same? I get the feeling that you have a JK Dana 44 pinion there, not a Dana 30. The tooth counts on both sets should be the same if they are for the same axle.

Haven't counted yet but it bolted to thw carrier for the dana 30

I already know the tooth count is different. The count is stamped right on the pinion. The original is 46-13 and the new one is 39-11. First number is the ring gear teeth and the second is the pinion.

I didn't ask if the ring gear bolted to the pinion.

So its s dand 44 pinion?

jodowii2 07-08-2013 05:37 PM

And I'm saying it nolted to the cage that houses the spider gears (idk what the correct termonalgy is)

I understand that it bolts to the carrier. That's not the answer to the questions about the diameter and the crown height.

You couldn't ask the seller what it came out of?

jodowii2 07-08-2013 06:45 PM

Yes I can and I will measure them sorru for the confusion

jodowii2 07-08-2013 07:50 PM

What do u mean measure the crown?

lucdog 07-08-2013 08:50 PM

I think what CSP means is lay the old and new ring gears, (aka crown gear ) on a flat surface and measure the height of both. The easiest way to do this is to lay a flat bar across the teeth, and measure from the flat surface to the bottom of the bar.
My wag is one of the ring gears is thicker, and it's the one with 39 teeth on the ring gear.
The correct term is the carrier, ie, " I bolted the ring gear to the carrier"

Thanks bill I'm just trying to figure this whole front end out ..... just want my jeep bavk on the trail

lucdog 07-08-2013 09:07 PM

This is what were after.

Wether or not you have the correct set, I don't know. This is why the diameter and height is important.

If it were me, I would have ordered a new set.

jodowii2 07-08-2013 09:16 PM

I woukd have love to buy a new set but I don't rely have the funds for that

CSP 07-08-2013 09:36 PM

Or at least buy a new set that you know for sure came out of a CJ.

jodowii2 07-09-2013 08:01 PM

Got some more info the crown height on the old is 1.230 and the diameter is 7, 1/8 inches

The new crown is 1.215 and the diameter is 7, 1/4 inches seems a little different

The time now is 09:17 PM.
