Question Reply Quickly... doors and top

i am wondering how well a CJ hardtop and YJ doors would go on an '83 CJ7. I have heard that the doors will work, but i am not sure if they match well with a CJ 7 top. if anyone knows please let me know asap as i have some offers pending. thanks a lot!

Straight bolt on. the doors are interchangable, the tops aren't.

so, you're saying that the doors and top will go together just fine then?

Yes, my buddies CJ-7 (1983) has YJ doors on it and he traded the YJ top for a CJ top that was on someone's YJ so that both parties would win as the tops aren't interchangeable as the doors are. Basically, the situation you are describing: 1983 CJ-7 with CJ top and YJ doors. (they fit 82CJ's to 95 YJ's) Each door is set up on that Jeep at "build time" so the hinges may have to be loosened and adjusted a little, but the door size and shape is the same.

The only exception is the EXPORT models as some of them have a 90 degree frame at the upper rear of the door instead of the rounded curve that is most common (matches the top with it)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the CJ top will fit on a YJ tub through 95, and it's the difference in tailgates that poses the problem. In the YJ, the tailgate swings out with the spare tire, and must be opened before the hatch, but on a CJ the hatch opens first. At least this is what I've heard. Actually, I plan to use my 80 top on my 91 tub, after swapping the tailgates. Dimensionally the tops are identical.

It's not so much a labor of love as it is shear determination.

Yes, each top will sit on the other tub, it is the lift gate and tailgates that are the problem. With the CJ, you swing open the tire gate first, then open the lift gate (as it covers the upper edge of the tailgate) and then, if need, lower the tailgate down. The lock is on the lift gate as it "locks" the tailgate as well just by being shut. With the YJ, the tailgate swings out, not down because it has the tire bolted to it. Because of this, you can't open the liftgate first as the tire is in the way. So you open the tailgate/tire, then the liftgate (yes the lower section of the liftgate is behind the upper section of the tailgate and "locks" it in place when shut) The lock is in the tailgate of the YJ. Put one top on the other (without switching tailgates) and you have to play a synchronizing game of opening and closing 2 gates at a time.....royal pain! and it doesn't shut right. Keep CJ tops on CJ's and YJ tops on YJ's....
