Replacing stock 21 Gallon

To anyone who can help!
I have to replace the Gas tank on my 1984 CJ7. It came stock with the 21 Gallon Tank. Does anyone know if the aftermarket tank that 4WD/Morriss/Fourwheelparts sells will fit into the original skid plate?

Thank you

Scott Earl

I got mine from MTS. They make fuel tanks for the military so I felt they should be good. http://www.mtscompany.com/

Actually, it says it is not.

STRAIGHT FROM MTS WEBSITE:
0051XL 1978-1986 Jeep® CJ 21 gallon tank. Does NOT come with skid plate. Includes skid plate extensions, new sending unit, lock ring and O-ring, and new top strap. Inline fuel filter required. This tank will NOT directly replace the original OEM 20 gallon factory "plastic" tank in any JeepCJ, a new skid plate and hoses are required. This tank will NOT physically fit in a CJ8 Scrambler. Dimensions 23" x 16" x 15"."

I checked it out because I have a factory 21 gallon and will probably need a replacement some day.

I just don't get why you can find replacements for everything BUT the 20gal tank. I had a 15gal replacement in mine, but it rusted out. The skid was perfect - still have it. If I could only find a replacement skid for the 20 gal I put in its place, I'd be happy. May have to go back to the 15 some day if I cannot find one.

Since your in PRK, it's going to have to be C.A.R.B. legal too.
IF they are still round. I would look here for a replacement.

Thanks everyone, this is what I found out. The stock 20 gal tank has no aftermarket. As suggested above by Scrapman the MTS is the way to go. However, the 20 Gal Skid Plate will not work with the MTS replacement. Looks like I have to get a Skid Plate from a 15 gal. set up and use the extentions from the MTS Kit. All this because of a Sending unit that will not seal. replaced the unit, the gasket, and the Nut.

Thanks again for your responses.

IF you had told us about the sending unit issue to begin with.......
Had same send'n unit issues.
Had to resolder the top of the SU where the tubes came through. NO ISSUE since then.

LG, my leak is coming from in and around the gasket. I can only figure that the tank is warped or something. All new parts and still leaking.

That's what I thought also with mine.
Make sure the 'nut' that screws down against the SU turns freely.
DBL ck to be sure you have the CORRECT "O" ring. This ares has to be SUPER clean.
Don't be afraid to coat the "O" ring with some silicon grease.
I still bet it's the soldered area on the top of the SU that's leaking.
Can you post GOOD pictures of the top of your SU and pictures of the tanks SU location?
"O" ring PN# is Omix 941521, which replaces Omix #17730.01
