Very much appreciated gentlemen!
Well, I did a little bit more checking and it seems like the ignition switch will want to turn the starter if it is run, start, off, acc, or even if there is not a key in it. I think the ignition switch is fried. And for the better news. I got it fired up tonight. Everything checked out electrically, so I read a few posts and followed some of the basic diagnostics on the MSD ignition boxes. Jeephammer posted about the magnetic trigger wires going into a constant state of coil collapse if they were induced by a current that was too close to the wire. I cut the zip ties that I had tied the trigger wire to the power wire with and BAM, it fired right up. It won't idle, and will only run if I feed it gas... but one step at a time. It sounds good and tight. The flowmaster delta 50 gives it a nice non-buzzy sound. I did video tape it, but I haven't figured out how and where I should stick the video.

what can I say, but wow! that looks like so much fun to build a jeep like that.
Those radial TSL's are so nice. While Im sure the more expensive SSR's ride nicer, my 33x12.5 Normal tsl radials work great on the street and the trail. What is the point of that gauge and that spacer under the carb? Is that an aftermarket carb? and what is with all that Vacuum tubing that you just removed? what was it for? And what did the "renagade" package actually include? All, in all I am amazed on how easy it is to do a complete tear down and rebuild of a jeep. I love the green. I think I saw a green CJ somewhere with copper flake or something that really looked good though. I would like to do a build like this after my dad and I finish are factory five cobra kit car. |

Our days in Jersey only have 24hrs, congrats on finding the time for such a fine build. Thanks for posting it. I just spent several hours reviewing it after discovering it tonight, subscribed! My 2 cents: Amsoil severe gear for the trans.

Hey great looking build! Your jeep is looking beautiful.
As for decals, it's hard to get the stock decals since Chrysler doesn't make them anymore... There is however a place I know of that remakes all the old Jeep decals that would be true and correct for your year. This is where I got the decals and pin strip for my '88 sahara. http://www.phoenixgraphix.com/ Your renegade decals can be found here: http://www.phoenixgraphix.com/amc/8384jrg.htm Although the decals are a bit pricey I found the kit to be dead on accurate and of excellent quality. They come out looking like new every wash and they hold up extremely well to the elements.... Did I mention they are BANG ON? Hope this helps. |

Thanks for the support fellas, it's much appreciated.
I have been high centered on the build here for the last few days. As long as I am toggling the throttle, it runs great, and is responsive. But, it won't idle. If I run the throttle up to 2500-3000 rpm (no tach to verify) and hold the rpm, it will slowly fall off and die. I don't know whether this could be a vacuum issue, or possibly a jet issue in the carb. If the accelerator pump is doing all the work it seems like I could be having this problem. I can't believe that the rebuilt carb would have plugged idle jet, but stranger things have happened. I went ahead and bought a new manifold gasket and one of the good thick carb base gaskets. The thought of pulling the manifolds off is not appealing at this point. Secondly, I am still having the problem with the starter wanting to run ALL the time. So, I got a new cylinder lock (it needed one) and a new ignition switch. They would be installed right now with good pics of the whole thing if I could find my steering wheel puller!! Thirdly, I realized as I was running the wiring harness to the rear of the jeep that I would have to pull all of the body mount bolts again and jack the tub up a bit so that I could get at the fuel sender. I should have dropped a couple of leads off of it while it was out in the open. Lesson learned on that one. Oh well, seems like I am treading water instead of pushing forward. ![]() Quote:

Finally making some progress. I think I posted about some small leaks in the fuel delivery system. I tackled this a couple of days ago by taking it all back off and apart. I then put it all back together making sure that I got good fuel grade tape on all of the NPT fittings. I was on the last turn of the the last fitting when I split the fuel regulator casing.
![]() I was pissed. So I ordered a new one and installed it, and am happy to say that there are zero fuel leaks. That's one down. Today I figured was a good day to get the fuel sending unit wired up. I had originally planned on taking the body mount bolts out and prying the body up a bit, but I had second thoughts and just dropped the tank back out. ![]() ![]() I took my time and made sure I was tight and had a good ground. I hate rework, but it wasn't too bad. So now I am down to the ignition switch and lock cylinder as soon as I get my hands on a steering wheel puller, and the darned idle problem. I think the dash wiring will go smoothly and it is just finish work from there on out.

No, this is about half-way down. I thought I would just drop the tank 6" or so and work the sender from there, but I ended up pulling it all the way out. Not much more work for good access.

I just read thru 15 pages of excellant posts. Great coverage of your entire build. Wonderful support and input from other members. I just had to regester and post. I have to admit I'm jealous mainly due to me having a CJ7 at home I wand to build and I have spent the last 9 months in Australia. But I will be home soon and I got several great ideas from your thread. Your CJ is SWEET. I hope I can get things done as well and in a timely maner as you have. Thanks for the thread.
