Renegade Rebuild
Alright, I finally am able to put my build up on the board. What it is:
83 CJ7 Renegade 258 I6 Dana 20 AMC 30 Dana 300 Stock everything including miles of vacuum hoses and a carter carb. What we're doing: Tub off, POR15 undercoat, paint shop, Raptor lining Team Rush, MSD ignition upgrade, MC2100 carb, header, glasspack, new interior (basically just about everything), nerf bars, winch, 35's, 4" skyjacker lift, tuffy console, bushwacker flares, and probably a few other things. Well, enough chat, here are some pics to catch up on progress so far. ![]() This is what it looked like, we had already taken out most of the interior. Broke a few bolts while we were at it. ![]() Started with the brakes in front. Honed the cylinders and replaced the bearings along with misc parts that were worn out. ![]() ![]() Painted the calipers. We will see how long they stay red. ![]() The front calipers struck me as odd in theat the cylinder does not seat up in the middle of the brake pads. ![]() Rear brakes next ![]() Those hubs are a b%*#& to get off!! I hope auto zone didn't look at that puller to hard when I took it back. When the hub finally came off it damn near took my motorcycle out with it. ![]() New parts all the way around. ![]() Cleaned up and honed the master cylinder. ![]() Got everything cleaned up and put back together. But then pulled it all off as we decided to take the tub off and start phase 2. ![]() The roll bar was a bastard also. Broke a few bolts off. ![]() Had some rust issues in the normal spots. ![]() ![]() First cut. ![]() ![]() And so started the cut, fab, and weld stage. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Nice job and great looking Renegade. Nice to see original decal stripes still on the Jeep and in good condition.
Since you are putting on nerf bars, would you want to sell those side steps? Would be interested in them as I need a set for my 84 Renegade.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Trimmed the fenders here for the 35's. Just cut back the roll and welded it back on. Also marked out and drilled the holes for the bushwackers. It seems that there is a left and a right although the instructions didn't say anything, but they are different. Filled all of the old holes. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Had to fab up several of the nut/plate keepers for the body mounts, and in the last few I had to weld a nut in for the seats. |

Sorry for all the pics in a row, but I have been working on this jeep for 3 months now and need to catch up. I have a thousand pictures so far of EVERYTHING, and am just picking a few that show the highlights. This is a T4 I think.
![]() If it is, then it will probably be the weak link in the drive train. 35's will probably shorten it's life span a bit. ![]() Here is where I patched in the holes that the original steps occupied. ![]() ![]() Clutch linkage needs to be replaced, funny how many times I have seen this on vehicles. ![]() Too many bolts broke off requiring surgery. Maybe next weekend it will be ready for the marine clean, metal ready, and POR15. We were talking about maybe spraying on some paint stripper just to get as much as we could before the POR. Anybody who has done the POR for undercoat, what did you use in the bolt holes or around the caged nuts to keep it off of anyting that it didn't need to be on. Also, sequencing wise, I figure that POR, then paint, then Raptor liner? |

I haven't done the POR 15 but have undercoated before and used either old hardware to screw in the holes or expandable foam earplugs that you simply roll between your fingers and insert into the threads.

Anybody know anything about this differential? I have not been able to find any good ID numbers anywhere.
![]() I am pretty sure that this is the Dana 300 transfer case: ![]() |

In the picture of the tranny in the last post you can see two white looking holes in the side of transmission. I don't think there was anything screwed into these holes, it just looks like the casing has deteriorated in these two spots (there is at least one hole like this on the other side). Anybody know what these are?

couple quick questions staying sua? or going soa?
secondly are you going to keep the renegade decals, or go with something totally different? some opinions: have you considered TJ flares? also what axle mods are you planning lockers, gears, 1 piece shafts etc?

I haven't honestly thought about sua vs. soa. What are the advantages and disadvantages of changing? I figure that the 4-4.5" skyjacker would give me enough lift if that was the major advantage. I worry a little bit about what the lift will do to the pinion and caster angle as is. As for decals, the paint shop is the next stop for the tub, fenders, grill, windshield, and tailgate. The decals will come off with it. I kind of like the old school Renegade decals. I haven't considered the TJ flares. The bushwackers don't look to bad just laying them on the fenders. What are the advantages of the TJ flares? So far axle mods are not planned. Budget, timing, etc has somewhat dictated the drivetrain. It would be nice to swap out the two piece axles. Gears may be a necessity with the big tires. We will see how it drives when the time comes. I do like to hear ideas from those who have been there so let me know what you think. |
