Removing Renegade decals and stripes
Does anyone have an easy way to remove the Renegade decals and stripes. I am planning to paint so the artwork has to go, but I've got to be careful as not to damage the paint underneath. Sanding is out. The best way is the tedious task of razor blade, it may take me months. Any ideas??????????

3 good ways:
1.) Use a heat gun. 2.) Get some 3M Decal Remover from a place that sells auto painting supplies. 3.) Get a "decal eraser". It is a rubber wheel that attaches to a drill or buffer and spins the decal off. It won't damage the paint. You can also get it at a auto paint store. |

im just curious, but if you are painting it, why do you care if the paint under the stickers gets damaged?

I still don't get how damaging the paint underneath the decals could hurt anything if you are repainting the whole jeep? but I guess if he runs a paint shop you might as well listen to him.

if you have a nice clean surface to paint on, scratching and chipping it tying to remove the decal will mess up the final product. there will be dimples and such from where the paint was chipped. now if he sands the dimples etc ect.. out, it leaves waves int he paint over top because you will never sand it smooth again.
or if he allready has these such as waves or others, why add to them.

Nice explanation, I'm not sure of all of the details but I'm following his directions. Lot of work taking off the decals. So far I've only tried the 3-m remover. Do you think the heat gun or rubber wheel will be easier?

I use to have a business that did alot of custom work for car and truck dealers. One of the things we did was removing and installing decals. We always used a heat gun. You have to be very carfull not to burn the paint. As soon as the decal begins to bubble you can pull it off. When you get the whole decal off there will be some sticky residue left over. You can use a product called "Goof Off" to remove the residue. the 3m will probably work also. Oh yeah, Goof Off is sold at Home Depot
Good luck Let us know what you find is the easiest way. |
