Red Hot Front Exhaust Pipe

Had my 80 cj7 258 running for a while the other day, i normally smell exhaust, but when i looked under the hood the front exhaust pipe coming down from the exhaust manifold was molten red. I also saw exhaust shooting out of the damper flap on the manifold toward the front of the jeep. Could it be clogged converter, timing off or distributor out...or all the above? It drives fine and idles pretty normal.

Red hot exhaust pipe in color usually means a "very lean" condition in the air/fuel mix.

Or a burned valve. A compression test will verify.

I've seen late timing cause this when the engine was under load.
