Hello to all;
I'm thinking about selling the Koening PTO winch off of my '56 Willys, to help pay for a new electric winch.
I love the solid, primitive aspect of the PTO, but I like the versatility of the electric, (using it without running the motor, if necessary; or using the drivetrain and winch at the same time). I'd also like to save weight.
Use will be infrequent; getting unstuck on trails.
So, anyone have reasons why I should hang on to the PTO setup? I've loved playing with many older machines, and tend to hang on to all old parts. But, I think I could sell the PTO for enough to pay for a decent electric, AND get the ratty seats recovered.
All opinions welcome; any info appreciated.
Many thanks;
Alan

Retro cool for sure. Sell it and step into the modern times. All winching platforms have pro, con but the electric wins every time, all things considered.
Problem is that unless you have a Dana Spicer 18 transfer case or a T-18 or similar trans with a PTO opening, you can't power the winch. Theres also a Dana 20 transfer case PTO that bolts on in place of the bottom pan but I haven't seen one of those in ages. Elecric winches are a lot simpler to install, among other things.
Info appreciated!
I'm not too worried about selling it.
I like selling things, and specialize in cool old stuff.
No doubt, a PTO winch is a highly specialized item, and the observation about needed a Dana - Spicer transfer case is right on. But, there are a ton of old Jeeps in central CA; we're at the foot of the Sierras. Lotsa farms, too; PTO winches seem better for regular equipment use than trail rescue).
Luckily, I have all the parts to make it work, and have used it. Apparently the shafts / u-joints, bearing, and transfer case hookups are harder to find than the winches.
feeBay can work, and if you haven't been to smokstak.com, ya gotta check that out.
If I had the room, I'd keep it, but space is tight.
Thanks, and happy trails to y'all;
Alan
It is there and working leave it. They are great, had one on my Scout and electric cannot compete in pull power or speed. They do add weight and crap hanging off the bottom though.
My brother has one on his 68 CJ-5 V-6 with T-18. He also did a Saginaw steering conversion so I believe he has 3 u joints in the winch drive shaft running from the Dana 18 T/C. Had to offset the winch toward the drivers side like shown in the OP's pic.
