rear main explosion

guys ive got my self in some deap poo. my 68 cj5 with a f 134 engine, has eatin its rear main alive! i cracked into it and its got an aftermarket one already but its the rubber/silicone. ive bought the old school rope one to replace it but i can't get the top part out. if i loosin the main caps will that give me enough head way to dig that one out? being sure not to score anything will im neck deap in this.

When changing rear mains seals, it is usually part of the procedure to loosen the main caps to allow the crank to drop down a little.

Is the oil slinger in bad shape? If you've got the pan off, you might as well measure end-play on the crank. That could be your problem.

What's the slinger?? And how much will the crank drop down?
