Rear drum is locked up

I am attempting to buy a CJ that has the rear wheel locked up. He claims that there is a bolt missing behind the drum which normally keeps the pads from dropping down. Since the bolt is missing the pads have dropped down causing the wheel to lock up. Does anyone know of how to fix this or what bolt could be missing? I don't know how to get it onto the flatbed trailer with the wheel locked. Bill

lets see,
pivot point and some springs keep the shoes in position.
I think the pivot point is not bolted on nor a bolt so I don't know what he is talking about.
Maybe the parking brake has been "on" too long and it has all rested together?

Take the wheel off and with a 4lb hammer beat the hell out of the drum.
Swing hammer towards the center of Jeep on the perimeter.
Worse that will happen is you bust the drum and thus can put the wheel back on and load.

blah.. If you're just trying to tow it. Don't even bother pulling the wheel off. Just hit as close to center as possible. If that doesn't work, try shooting some WD40 or similar down inside the drum and try it again. Then, try dragging it on a solid surface and hit it with a hammer. If none of that works, start taking it apart.

In the scrap car business, I come across that type of problem almost daily. Although I usually just snatch block my 8000lb winch to 16000lbs and pull away.

Might try backing off the star adjuster at the bottom of the backing plate.

Excellent advice. I have had this happen to me several times, and each time I was able to back off the star adjuster to the point where the wheel freed up. It takes some fiddling around with a brake adjuster tool or short-handled slotted screwdriver, but you should be able to do it. Spray WD40 or Liquid Wrench in the access hole if the star adjuster is frozen. Remember to push the autoadjuster finger away from the star adjuster with one screwdriver and move the star adjuster down (not up) from the access hole with another screwdriver.
