rear axle re-installation for dana 44

Just want to make sure this is done right. Tomorrow I should hopefully have the right new bearing and seal and get them pressed on the axle. The salesman at napa tried to tell me that there was only one bearing for my year jeep, which i new wasnt true, so I figured there was a 50/50 chance getting the wrong one, which was what happened. Then I should tap the race into the axle housing, put a light coat of grease around outside of seal, install axle and tighten bolts on the retainer plate. When I removed it today, I had to scrape a light coat of sealant where the retainer plate was, not sure as to the reason it would be there, but is that something I should do, is put some sealant on the retainer plate?

The bearing should be "set 10". I have read articles saying to put some silicone on the outside of the axle seal. I've put axles in with and without silicone and I have not had leaks either way with new seals. The only leaking axle seals I had were with seals having over 175K miles on them.

One last question. It seems that the bearing would get lubed from the gear oil in the axle housing, so do I still need to pack the bearing?

yes, If it has no seal on the diff side of the bearing, the lube will be it. I would install it wet or jack up each side to lube it after its all together. I always had to use silicone on the retaining plate or it would leak at the plate seam.
