Reality Check? How much is my CJ5 worth?

Does anybody have any ideas how much my 1977 CJ5 (with a good VIN and good title) might be worth? Let's see, the frame is decent (somebody "fixed" some rust, but not bad), the tub is rusted, the clutch needs to be replaced, and it drools quite a bit of oil (I think from near the starter). Otherwise the engine runs really well, and it even idles pretty good. I drove it a few miles the other day, and it didn't skip a beat.

Can anyone give my some idea as to how much it might be worth? I am not planning on building it. I know from experience, if you build it, you had better drive it forever, because you never get you money back out of it.

So what could it be worth? I know about 100, to some of you (and you would come get it tomorrow). But realistically?

On second thought, if this was YOUR jeep, how much would you ask for it?

Cheers,

John

The market is regional.

CJ's in that shape are a dime a dozen in drier climates. In the rust belt, it would be worth more.

Bottom line is, it's worth what someone is willing to pay for it. In Kansas, $2500-$3000 would be my guess.

$2500- $3000 around here can get you a decent running cj7 with a top in that condition. I would say around $1400 low side to $2000 high side around here.

Isn't his the one with the iffy title? Are you trying to unload it 'cause you can't register it?

Nope. If you see what I said in my OP "1977 CJ5 (with a good VIN and good title)" We are in the process of getting the VIN re-issued through the KHP. If you have been following my other thread, you would see that story.

Matt, and MoC, thanks. That is good. Great info.

Cheers,

John

Would you be adverse to parting it out? Sounds like the engine just needs a rear seal. Let the buyer see it run, and let them pull it. Desirable trans and NT disc axle w/6bolt hubs are worth bucks. Have the tub blasted, or sand it yourself, and sell it as is. Having the title for the body makes it worth money to somebody who went w/a glass tub and threw the VIN away. Hey, it happens! Radiator, engine brackets etc...will bring $$ too.
Just a thought.
Put a feeler price in the classifieds???

I've also learned that sometimes... when people don't agree with you .... its best to hold them down and kidney punch them till they agree with you

I parted out my 1980 CJ5 with an original 304, t176 with 40k miles that was rusty. Didn't sell $500 worth of parts on this forum. Did get over ~$400 from the scrap yard.

Mid- atlantic area you could ask $1600-$3000 depending on how rough it is. I dont think you'd get more than $2200 for it. Mostly b/c of the rust.

Just my $0.02

Yo didn't update your other thread to reflect this. Is the KHP going to re-issue a vin, because your other thread said they wouldn't?

Thanks for the input. I updated the other topic also, but I have confirmed that I will have a clean VIN and title for that jeep. I have renewed interest in keeping it now. Maybe I will drive it for the summer.

Cheers,

John

Your Jeep is worth a LOT more today than yesterday! Woot!

"I Got my VIN right here!"

I'd rather be lost on the trails than found at home!

if you are willing to sit on it around here, in running condition some hunter would probably give 3k easy for it.

Bingo. "Sorry WNC, yes this is the one." "No problem John, I was following your other thread, and didn't see that." "You're right! I have since fixed it." All good!
