Someone once told me that International Harvester used the AMC 401's in their school buses. Even though the busses are dog'd to death they usually got regular maintainence and probably coul be rebuilt. Everytime I see an old yellow school bus I look to see if it is an I.H. Seems most were Fords.

Not really rare, but certainly not plentyful and easy to find either.

I doubt the school theory, but IH did use AMC 401's in Travellalls and maybe pickups. Mine came out of a 1975 Travellall. I think IH called them 400, not 401. Get to your junkyard and start searching!

I would say it depends on your location. Up here in the upper midwest where salt is used heavily on the roads in the winter, old Jeeps are hard to find. There are basically 2 kinds: 1.)Those that were driven year round and are rotted out and 2.) Those that were restored and are only driven in summer. That makes useable parts pretty hard to find, especially for CJ's. I doubt I could find a 401 here in WI if I had to.

I didn't feel the need to go looking for old I.H. busses cause I have a fresh built 401 but I will take the challenge. I travel 40k miles a year all over Texas. If the I.H. 401 gold mine is out there, I will find it! Get back to you later.

hfjeff,

Looks like your '78 CJ is leaning to the driver's side. So does mine. What's up?
