Random Part

I need help identifying a part... I don't have any photos at the moment but I can obtain some if necessary.

My jeep is a 1984 CJ7 with the AMC I6 258 engine. The part is located directly behind (towards the rear) the Carb / Air box. It is about the size of a soda can and has a hose that connects to a line going to each of the ports on the Exhaust Manifold. The part number is AMC 322364. I have done several searches and so far no luck. It has not shown up in any of the parts catalogues that I have seen.

Does anyone have any ideas what it could be and if it is even necesary. There is a second hose coming off of it. However, the previous owner cut it off at the part and I cannot see where it would have went.

I found that. It is located on the fire wall towards the bottom on the drivers side. This is about the same height as the carb. The hoses are an inch in diameter.

Sounds like the diverter valve for the air pump for the emissions. There would be a larger hose about an inch in diameter from the air pump to the valve, then the outlet to the air manifold to the exhaust. Mine did not have any other hoses to it, but some may have had a line that went to the catalytic convertor. There would also be a vacuum line to it from the manifold or maybe from a temp controlled vacuum switch..

On a '84 258 he would have the pulse air system if he still had it but I cannot think of any component the size of a coke can. I also do not follow the statement about "line going to each of the ports on the Exhaust Manifold". A picture in this case would probably be best.

Is this what you are talking about? http://home.sprynet.com/~dale02/pulseair.htm

It was the Diverter Valve. Here is the diagram. Thank you all for your help. I started looking up those parts and finally found it.

If you end up removing all your emissions hardware, don't just throw it away. CJ owners in States which still require this hardware post in the Wanted forum looking for some or all of it from time to time. If you pull it off, list it in Classifieds and help someone out.

This is how NAXJA Midwest Chapter elected officials like to treat their resident users and former multi-year supporters.
