Is a radio in a cj pointless?

I have question for you cj5 owners that are running a 350 small block with side pipes. Can you guys/gals even hear your radio will driving down the road at 50+ mph. I really want to put a radio in mine, but I kinda feel like its pointless.

I don't have one in my CJ7 w/I6 because I couldn't hear it on the road. And my CB is only used on the trails. (read: going slow)

I couldn't be without one. Even when topless, which is almost always.
But I do have the 4.2 with a nice quiet Walker muffler on it.

I couldn't be without one, either. I can hear it just fine topless in my I6 - two fronts and two 6x9s in the rear.

I installed a system in mine with speaker lock boxes and all and a console mounted cd player, that was many years ago, I have not turned it on in a couple years, totally pointless for me, in michigan there is more top on time than top off. I too have the 4.2 liter, with the top off it isnt bad. But with a softtop and anything over 45 you wont hear the radio. I wish I wouldn't have installed one.

I have quiet quiet mufflers and drive real slow. The stereo is used but only because you cannot go surfing without the Beah Boys!!!!!!!!!!

Otherwise utterly pointless. Fortunately quality sound is not needed so $20 second hand radios suffice, they don't last long in a leaky CJ.

I can hear mine with the top off at 55. 304 with side pipes. the cd player portion is worthless though. I suggest get something with a front aux input and use your ipod or whatever you may have. I got the head unit 2nd hand off ebay for like 30 bucks, then I picked up a cheapo no name mp3 player because I figure it will get ruined

I have a cheapo Pyle radio I gor for $25 new, and 5" sony speakers to fit in the dash from Walmart on clearance for $15. The radio has ipod hook up, usb port and sd card slot. Fits in the stock hole for shaft radio. It works great I can hear it with the top off going about 50 mph.

I intend to install one.
Actually have it and the speakers int he garage.

Only reason I haven't yet, is because I am always *fixing* something on the dang thing!

Radio always ends up low ont he priority list.....

kody,

I went with the RetroSound unit, with a small amp in the console, and good quality 6x9s in the rear.

It will crank louder than I care to listen, even with with no top.

My V8 does have a nice quiet single exhaust, however, so your mileage may vary.

Except for my CB used on the trails, no I don't have one.

Question for those who do: How loud must your radio be to hear it? Are you "sharing" your music with others in traffic? With my soft top up or down, there's no way I could hear it without it being LOUD.

Windnot,

I roll with a hardtop most of the time. My doors have all new seals, and I have carpet, so the cab noise isn't bad at all. I can hear my radio at a very moderate volume.

The god-awful flapping noise is one of the reasons I got rid of my soft-top years ago.

Matt,
You like that radio? I was wondering if anyone had installed one. I like the old school look but digital operation
