rack and pinion on a CJ?????

a buddy of mine is looking at a CJ-5, 1977 I think, and he was told the rack and pinion was shot. The owner told him that he got the front wheels up in the air and came dfown pretty hard, heard something break, and didn't realize what was broken till he started to go and hit the throttle pretty good to go up a hill.

I didn't think that CJ's had rack and pinion, could someone help me out. Thanks, AL

Just a guess, He could have said "RING and PINION" as if he was in 4 wheel drive, spinning tires up the hill, slams the front end down hard, the wheels came to a hard stop, drive train kept going, and broke teeth on one or both of them.
