Question on timing marks

I just did the nutter bypass on the weekend and tryed to set my timing to the suggested 8 degrees. The problem is I can see the marks on the timing cover and the mark on the balancer, but I can't see the numbers on the cover to tell where I'm setting it. If some one can post a pic of a timing cover or tell me where 0 and some of the other marks are numbered, it would be appreciated.

Thanks

0* is on the far right hand side looking at it from the front and it goes up from the right to left by increments of 2*

Spray it down with carb or brake cleaner to get the crud off. Then you'll be able to see the marks better.

Why 8? if you did John Nutter bypass than the correct timing is about 15 at idle.

A better way for setting timing is with vacuum gauge.

The artical I read said 8 degrees. However, if I go off memory of what I saw on the weekend and what I've been told, I'm at about 8 degrees and its pinging under heavy load and its running a little warmer. I'll try 15 and see what happens. Anyone else want to share their experiences.

Factory setting is 8 +/- 2 degrees at 1,600 RPM. Bear in mind, that was also with the EECU trimming spark. I too have seen that article (and most others) and it does say 8, but I think that's because that's what the factory said. My 258 won't run that retarded, I have to advance to about 12-15 if I want a decent idle, but right now my 258 isn't running at all, so that may tell you something

Timing Marks:

Definitely give the damper mark a dab of paint once you clean it up. It will help you with the timing light if you use one.
