question about gears

I have a 79 cj7 with stock amc20 rear and dana30 front end.Jeep has 3 speed manual in it.How would I know what gears I have od do any of you guys know what would have came out with this set up? I am going to be putting an ax15 5 speed out of a YJ and want to know if my gears will be ok going to a 5 speed?

Your desired tire size is needed to determine what gears would be correct for you.

It has 31/10.50/15 on it..I am swapping out the 258 for the FI 4.0 and 5 speed with a Dana 300 ts.

Your old transmission's 3rd gear is 1:1 and the AX-15's 4th gear is 1:1. The 5th gear will be to only one that's different and it's .79:1.

As for your axle ratios, you could check the tag/stamp on them, if they're still there.

You could also spin a wheel and count the revolutions of the driveshaft.
- One wheel off the ground: spin it two revolutions.
- Both wheels off the ground spinnin the same direction: spin one revolution.
