Quadratrac swap thread
Finally have no choice but to swap out the Q-trac. The new chain I put in close to a year ago, is starting to jump teeth already. Road driving it is fine, 99% of wheeling it is fine, the 1% when I need to put some mustard on it, not so fine.
When the first chain stretched, I figured with 90some thousand miles, it was just it's time. A cheap Crown replacement lasted literally 4 hours. The brand new Morse lasted almost a year. Add that to the stripped out inner splines of the previous clutch cones, and it's just too much to keep fixing.
It seems it's just not meant for the type of wheeling I like to do.

After searching high and low, and trying to find what I can from anybody that has swapped in a Dana 18, I came up blank. Many people start threads asking about doing it, get advice on swapping everything but what they asked about, and the thread dies with no conclusion.

I've decided to start this thread so maybe somebody else can learn from it. But mostly because I have no idea what I am doing, and will surely have some questions along the way.;)

Picked up a small bore, 6 spline input, 1.25" intermediate shaft Dana 18 for $100. I know the guy, and trust him. He told me if there was any problems other than normal wear and tear, he'd give me another one.

Opened up the pan. The oil looked kind of funky, but no signs of water. Scraped the bottom of the pan, no signs of metal shavings.
What I really wanted to do was check for wear on the intermediate shaft. It looks fine as far as I can tell, no marks other than what looks like normal bearing marks. As of now I don't plan on replacing it.
Ordered a gasket and seal kit from Novak.

I have some time as Novak is running off the adapters right now. They won't be read to ship for about a week.
So I might as well strip it down and replace all of the gaskets and seals while I am waiting.

First step of the swap.:cheers2:

No need to swap the rear axle. It's offset already.:cheers2:

I had kicked around ideas of other T-cases, but kept coming back to the 18.
Strong, off set, rear output 5" lower than a center output T-case, good low range, and cheap.
I already have my off set axle welded up, Moser axles, and a locker in it. Not to mention a replacement axle sitting in the garage that only has 14,000 miles on it if I ever need it.

Seemed like a better choice than a 20 or 300, for me anyhow. There is no way I am giving up the automatic.

I'll be watching this one as I'm sure a lot of us Qtrac runners will. It's too bad no one can make us a good chain.
I love my Quadratrac.

Video will not play, says its private.

It wont even let me watch it. LOL
It was in the post when i was on the computer, may be a mobile thing.

Try this again....Climbing up many steep hills it was fine. The steady throttle locked the teeth in and it never slipped. Goose it with some slack in the chain, and it jumped like hell.

Why do you opt for the 18 and not the 20? In my opinion its a bit better and more available?

VooDoo2 09-02-2013 06:23 AM

The D18 is offset output, the D20 is centered.

Didnt realise the Qtrek is already offset.

Thank you for starting this. I have a 78 cj7 Qtrac v8 that I am about to rip into. I was debating whether to keep or ditch the Qtrac because of its issues. I will definitely be following this.

The new seal and gasket kit is on Its way. Hope to get the 18 all put back together this weekend. Then Its Just a matter of waiting until Novak finishes Productions of the adapters.
I cant tear anything down yet as i am still daily driving it.

Any tips on making a dana 18 leak free will be greatly appreciated.

Did you try the chain from Alloy USA?

I want to pick up a spare for my Cherokee because I don't know when the 5.3/4L60/NP241 swap will happen.

I did not find any information on their chain, but I know the one-piece axles were stamped Made in India.

The time now is 10:28 AM.
