putting a 360 in my cj
I am swapping the 258 from my cj 7 for a 360 from a wagoneer. What do I need? I see that the pass side motor mount wont work. Should I change the frame mount, the engine mount or both? Also, I need a 360 flywheel. HELP

Im planning the same swap but with a reman. motor, and Im planning a fuel injection etc etc. Anyway yeah need a 360 flywheel, pilot bearing if old motor you have has one I would replace anyways. I have heard people useing one original engine mount and makeing the other but your right have to do somethen there, can buy engine mounts for the cj 304 same block. Probly should look at a larger radiator. Exhaust, fuel delivery, and throtle linkage pretty easy. Im not sure if the inline 6 starter is the same as the AMC V8 starter and I dont know what all you have with this motor you got. Hope this helped.

hi all, i converted both my 76 & 79 CJ-7 to 360's great engine you will love it.
both mine came with 304 v8s originally, so i was set from the get go. as i recall the harmonic balancer & flywheel were both specific to the 360. (it's been 13 years since the last one was swapped) I still have both jeeps. 3row HD/desert cooler / 4 row rad is a must. also consider your corporate rear axle a candidate for problems with the extra torque. brian

I'm running a 1972 AMC 360 in my '77 CJ7 right now, and love it. It has so much power, it can be scary sometimes, LOL. I have about 5 1/2" - 6" lift (4" spring, 1 1/2" - 2" body), it came to me that way. Putting 33s on soon (31s on temporarily now until done with body work).
So far, the 3-core factory radiator that you can buy anywhere has worked beautifully, no problems cooling at all, even without a shroud. I do have a flex-fan on the motor. The starter is the same for all AMC I-6 and V8s. The 360 flywheel is specific to the 360 motor, no other one will work. The jury is still out on which rear end is stronger, by the way, (AMC 20 or Dana 44). In my opinion, and many others, the AMC can easily be stronger (at least AS strong as a Dana 44) with simply swapping the stock axle shafts for one-piece. The weak point of the AMC 20 is just the tapered 2-piece axles. The Dana 44 does have slightly thicker axle tubes, but that only comes into play with severe off-roading, not with torque. In fact, new 1/2" thick axle tubes are now available for the AMC 20 which practically make it bulletproof. The AMC 20 has a better gear setup than the Dana 44. Larger ring gear diameter and deeper teeth. Just some food for thought on the axle issue before you get worried. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> |

The 360 is an externally balanced engine and the flywheel is unique for that reason. think most of the rest has been covered!

What about the cherokee motor mounts ? Will they work? Does anyone know where to find a 360 flywheel for a standard trans new or used?
