Putt - putt from exhaust

Last January on a cold night, CJ suddenly began sputtering going uphill. Had only been running 5 minutes. Here's what I have done in sequence since then in an effort to remedy condition.. Removed cat converter and replaced with straight pipe; complete tune up - plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, cleaned carb; disconnected high altitude wire from block; repaced stock Carter carb with Webber; vacuum line to EGR valve was never present, so I removed EGR & plugged hole in manifold; oxygen sensor valve was never present; removed valve cover to check rods/springs.. all OK; replaced distributor with new one.... rotated for ideal timing.... Jeep still makes putt - putt noise.. exhaust is clear. Seems to worsen the longer I drive - sometimes to the point of stall. Anybody????

Check the exhaust manifold bolts. They loosen. If not them check exhaust manifold for cracks.

I had a pushrod slip out from the rocker but you have checked that.

Well, look at it this way, a Putt-Putt noise is better then a Chitty Chitty Bang Bang noise.

I guess I'm no help....

I'm wondering if it could be the ignition module.
