Prop valve (how do you hold valve out)

Fixing to bleed rear brakes and need tip on how to hold prop valve out while I work the bleeder valve. Of course I don't have the right tool so do any of you have a trick that will allow me to pull it and then go around to the back?

Thanks,
Barryb

I've heard arguments on opening the valve vs. leaving it alone. Haynes Manual says open it. If you don't have the special tool, pull the rubber cover off the front, have someone push the brake pedal, and then grap the small pin with a pair of small vice grips.

If you are using the factory proportioning valve (on the frame just below the driver's floor), you have to hold the "bypass" open in order to bleed the rear brakes. This valve relieves the residual pressure. This is a small stem on the front end of the proportioning valve. Sometimes there is a small rubber cap over it. There is a small stem that you can pull out. It is spring loaded and will pop back in if you let it go. You have to hold this pin out while you bleed the back brakes. I use a small pair of vise grips to hold it out. Be careful not to use too much force.

I've never messed with my prop valve while bleeding the brakes and never had an issue. I say leave it alone. Get a friend to help you bleed the brakes though if you don't have speed bleeders or another system that works effectively for doing it alone.
