Pap, that's why I post this stuff, If ya need a pic of something on the tub while it's off just let me know.

Bard,
rnemovr,
Thanks guys, starting to make progress.

Sand blasted till 9pm last night and from 4 to 7 tonight.
Blew, vacuumed, cleaned all the sand I could off and sprayed 5 cans of Zinc primer to cover all the bare metal spots and then some. Just got through cleaning up, I'll shoot some pics when I can but this tub's going to get set on the frame in the next couple of days!!!

Fatman- Above you mentioned "metal based" filler. Did you actually use a metal based filler or were you simply stating that you preped the rocker panel for a metal to filler surface? i.e. removed all paint and cleaned the metal.
If it is a metal based filler what kind is it, and why did you use it instead of a plastic filler?

BTW- "Project Tub" is looking good. You work much faster than I did.

Elmer, thanks, it seems like it is taking forever.
It's a metal filler, I'll get the name off the can for ya tonight. The paint supplier recomended this over the typ bondo plastic type fillers as it's harder and more durable. It uses a liquid hardner like fiberglass instead of the cream type.

On another note, I was going to use POR 15 on the areas I sand blasted to bare metal, but decided to use zinc primer. Several people stated that the Herculiner would not stick to the POR15 without a lot of addl work. I plan on spraying the Herc directly to the zinc ... anyone see a problem with this? All of the rust is gone so I don't see a need for the POR15 now. ?

Project "Tub" meets project "frame" and project "motor"
Set the tub yesterday and tightened down the BL. Found out the Cage is going to have to come off in order to get the Jeep out of the garage.

"Frame"

"Motor"

Reunited:

Front section of bar

one half inch of clearance even with the T/C drop

randon photo for display

Made a hitch type lisc plate holder:

Probually have several weeks of fit up / moc up to do before I get back to actual "tub" work.

Now that the metal work is done the next issue will include:
  • Body filler drying to the mixing bucket instead of vehicle.
  • Herculiner removal and look at my new haircut.
  • Paint spray and flashbacks to the 70's
  • Renovations to garage i.e. new 9' garage door.

Fat - Did you do this type of write-up on your frame and engine build? I'd like to see it if so...

Wow. Impressive work. I have one in a bit worse shape I want to do the same sort of work to. But I don't weld (hope to learn someday).

My plan was to get everything cut and bribe a friend to come weld it all up for me.

Problem is as I got to cutting I found lots of hidden rust. Worried it might be too far gone.

There's rust up inside this riser. That's why I think it's too late.

And I'm sure this will be a mess.

Spoke with my paint supplier (same shop that turned me on to the metal body filler) said the zinc primer is fine to spray etching primer over and paint.
Areas getting Herculiner can get direct application after prep.

Bastage, I didn't. I should have but once started I didn't stop to collect thoughts and write down the details. If you or anybody have any questions on the motor, frame, of suspension feel free to ask away.
If you want to see pics of anything I've done follow the rebuild link in my sig.

Scott, looking at your pics your front floors look much better than mine. I think you have a workable tub.
Get a 4.5 grinder, cut-off wheels, grinding wheels, flapper wheels, wire wheel, sand blaster, sawzall and have at it. I did this stuff with my dad when I was a kid (we rebuild Austin Healeys, Mercedes, Porsches) I mostly watched but now I get to do this with my son and it's been a great time for us. On top of that I have a friend here in Raleigh that has every tool I don't, he's a great motivator too.
Keep your welds clean, blast the rust with a sandblaster that you can't get with the wire wheel and go at a comfortable pace!

I'll post more pics of what I found when I got to cutting this weekend.

I can't wait for my son to get old enough to help me. He turns 2 next month. Here's a pic from Spring of '06:
