Project Impulse - '78 CJ7 - Opinions Needed!!
This is more of a log than anything else, as a fore warning. But I figure it's any easy way to keep everything in one spot for me and anyone else.
This is my first CJ, but not my first Jeep venture. Not entirely sure where this will go in the future, but I've already got some plans. The name comes from the fact that this was basically an impulse buy of me wanting a CJ. -Get Motor and Swap it in (304) and get it moving on it's own -Upgrade to YJ Booster -Get Heat -Fix anything electrical that's askew (marker lights, turn signals, gauges & dash, etc) -Remove Body Lift and go down to 33s -Get Audio setup -Possibly repaint it Picked up Saturday,December 12, 2009. Came with Glass tub, 304, Dana 30, AMC 20...the usual. Included full cage tied into frame, full hard top/soft top, and full hard doors/soft doors. Also got another tcase and trans, as well as another 304. But it was left outside for 9 months and had an iceburg in the cylinders. Also included New seats, 4" lift, 35s, ~2" Body Lift, and some other misc junk like a 254 header and manifold, lol. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I also like this dash setup and might mimic it if I can find decent gauges on fleabay.

Nice looking from the Pics.
Why are you going smaller on the tires? Just curious.

I've done the big tire thing before. This isn't a dedicated wheeling vehicle, at least not now or anytime in the foreseable future. So I figure 33s would best fit it - and I don't care for Body Lifts really.

Looks like a solid find. How much out of pocket if you don't mind the question.

Looks like a sweet foundation to start with. Might want to get a new windsheild in it, to keep the smokeys of your backdoor.

Not my windshield. That's just an example dash that I hope to replicate.

Picking up my 304 tonight. Doing the Rear Main Seal on it tomorrow and swapping it out and putting in the trans/tcase!
Also ordered everything I need to setup heat in my CJ today...including a blazer motor. And i'm looking at a house today to rent with a garage and my bank account is healthier than I expected... it's been a great day! |

Let me offer some of my advice from one orange cj to another.
Skip the 304 and go straight to the 360 you'll be much happier. Also team rush it, you'll love it and won't look back. It looks like you also have a fiber glass front clip in addition to the glass tub, no more rust issues To get the 360 in all you need to do is take the 304 out and put a 360 in. The 304 and 360 are externally identical, so everything (exhaust distributor carb, intake, and on and on) will work on the 360. The only problem is the flywheel or flex plate is different between those two engines. As well as the harmonic balancer, most take out engines you will find used will have the harmonic balancers on them still. Also get the yj heat duct for your cj. It makes a huge difference.

WELL.....
The 304 is in and it cranks, but that's about as far as we got here by 4am. Also did the rear main seal and all the oil pan gaskets. Definitely a lot of work, but well worth it I think. As of now, works stopped until we get a multimeter and figure out why we can't get any spark. Also found a lot of future things i'll need to take care of, such as ujoints. But i'm a pro at swapping those out by now. As for the fact that the PO said he ran the motor too low on oil, I call BS. The engine bay is covered in mud and stuff and I found more evidence such as a trans full of water. I'll try to get some more photos of those gems and some others tomorrow. Also, a big thanks to mcurcio today for giving me a hand with all this, couldn't do it without ya. ![]() ![]() 304 in the back of my ZJ coming home from Columbus ![]() All removed ![]() Wonder why it didn't run?! ![]() Found this little guy as well.... More photos and hopefully a moving Jeep sometime in the next 24 hours. For now, it's bed time, been for and wrenching for 22 hours now. ![]() |

![]() 2nd Gear anyone? The ignition issues i'm having now have me stumped. Replaced the coil and control module but i'm still having issues of not getting ANY spark. I'm lead to believe that the wiring is correct, from what I've been able to follow on the diagrams. I'm thinking maybe I have a bad coil or module out of the box...I've done the test list posted in a few other threads but I seem to have contradicting results and inconsistencies with the wiring listed in the tests versus the wiring I actually have present. If anyone is in/near Toledo and available after 2 tomorrow, PM me or give me a call. I'd like to maybe have someone else take a look at it and see if they know more about it than I do. I'm coming from an OBD II vehicle here, haha. |

IT LIVES!!!!!!!
Well, the guys at Murrays were actually useful. Turns out the distributor stator was bad and I was missing the condenser. But, the coil wasnt getting a signal to fire. |

Well, I found someone who works in the propane industry. I may be able to get a propane setup done really cheap. What's a reasonable rate for tanks though? I was quoted this for them:
"33lb. - $20 + Tax, 60lb. - $50.50 + Tax, 100lb - $70 + tax." With ~4.22 gallons per pound, that works out to be almost $3/gallon. Has the price really gone up that much or did I just get high pricing? Last edited by _Kyle_; 12-21-2009 at 12:20 PM.. |

Got it out today for the first time...Now the long list of repairs starts. I'm letting mcurcio take care of that honor.
