Prestolite to teamrush upgrade- Amc 360 v8
I have the Summit cdi module and my remain motorcraft dizzy is on order. My question is can I run the stock can coil or should I upgrade to the E-coil? Also my wires are new 7mm, should those be replaced too? Is the msd cap worth it or should I go 79 ford 302 standard cap w/ brass terminals? Thanks jeephammer and anyone else!!!!!!!!!!!

I used the following parts to get my 304's ignition upgraded. They all perform like a dream for me. I would step up to at least 8mm wires (MSD preferably) and definitely get an E-core coil. The MSD "cap-a-dapts"" set can not be beat IMO. It uses the HEI style dizzy top which locks your wires in place.

No issues what so ever once a CDI module is used! ------------------- Spark plug wires aren't an issue as long as you have the correct terminals for the new cap. Nothing beats MSD for good caps! If you want to buy a 'Premium' cap from somewhere else, then be my guest, just make sure it has brass terminals.

would upgrading the coil be a benefit? Or just a waste of cash. Also, the application for the stock cap and rotor that will fit the amc dizzy is 79 ford 1/2 ton 302 v8. Is that correct? Thanks again.

I just did the cap/rotor/wire upgrade to my 360. I found the MSD Cap/Rotor kit at Advance Auto and it didn't cost more than any other brass terminal cap and rotor.

I just did the cap-a-dapt,coil up grade, and plug wires(8.5) all MSD and was it well worth it. Fires right up, Idles smother, runs much better. I would highly advise using the MSD Ign. parts good quaility!!!!!!!

There is no such thing as an 'UPGRADE'... Any coil you drive with that MSD module is going to put out 500% to 600% more spark energy than the factory ignition, And any 'Increase' would be so small you wouldn't hardly be able to gauge it on an Oscilloscope, and I'm absolutely sure you wouldn't be able to feel the difference in the drivers seat... Ford use the 'Large Cap' and cap adapter on nearly everything V-8 from '75 to '84, so any of the above listed will work. I just use '79 as a likely years since I have a '79 Jeep, and the '79 Distributor is the last year with full advance built into it.

The dizzy that I ordered was from a 82 wagoneer 360. The part numbers are the same for all the Amc v8 that had the motorcraft dizzy. So what is the difference between full advance and not? Thanks Jeephammer.

I don't know where you ordered it, but there should be a split, two numbers for the '78 to '82 or '83, and the '82 or '83 to '90.
Just check it for advance when you get it...

It is easy, just leave the vacuum advance unhooked and plugged, and rev up the engine to about 1,200 RPM or 1,500 rpm, and directly read the advance from the balancer.
Subtract the 'Initial' setting (around 6 Degrees) and that will be the centrifugal advance total. If you want to get REAL technical about it, you get shell out $4 for timing tapes that wrap around your balancer to tell EXACTLY how much advance you are getting... Nothing to it really. And if you want MORE Centrifugal advance, it's built into the distributor and with about 30 minutes work you can add about 5 degrees more centrifugal advance. (5 degrees doesn't sound like much, but take my word for it, it's A LOT in the bottom end like that!)
