Just stumbled onto your project, and wow. Great work in a really short time. Makes me want to get off my arse and to yank that darn Carter BBD I have been delaying on doing. Also love the color scheme.

One thing I think would look good, and go well with your color scheme is blacking the head light rings. I did this on my gray CJ5 and it really highlights the round eyes now.

I used the original T-case boot as it was in decent shape. The shifter boot I either ordered through Quadratec or Morris 4x4 (I think). It is the OEM style rubber boot, not plastic. I also ordered the shifter boot ring and painted both it and the original T-case boot ring with hammered silver metallic paint (Rustoleum I think). Not at home right now so I'm unable to check.

Very nice! I am about to start on a 78 CJ5 and threads like this give me hope. I have limited prior body work knowledge and a basic understanding of mechanics...should be a fun and frustrating project while I get over the learning curve. I really enjoyed following your build.

Sorry about the absence ya'll but I've been sidetracked since finding out in late June that my wife of 23 years has been leading a secret life for the last couple years. Divorce is ongoing but CJ project has been put on hold for the time being. Judge has ruled completely in my favor in the initial hearing but my lawyer is costing a ton so I'm holding off on any major funding of the CJ project.

I'll be back!

Hang in there. Been through 2 nasty divorces myself. In a month or two you will be wondering why you didn't kick her to the curb sooner! Find you a gal that's a few years younger than her and ride her around in that jeep.

Sorry dude. That sucks.

Just stumbled on this. I'm glad the paint worked for ya. I preach the ease of use and good looks of Gillespie Coatings. I was torn between the WWII green and sand and went with the Green. Kind of wishing I went sand after seeing yours. I read somewhere you can get a lusterless clear that won't add shine or gloss to the paint but will protect it like a clear. I don't think this paint needs it.

Anywho - if you decide to grab new wheels and rims, I may be interested in the old rims. You're not too far from me and I go to the ATL from time to time.

I have a cousin with the Rangers who I think is still down in Columbus.

When you get a chance could you let me know where you got the rocker panels?

Thanks and good luck,

Thanks for the support ya'll. Things are going pretty well. Been nice and peaceful around the farm with just the dogs and horses!

To answer a couple previous questions from OP's:

Garbageman, thanks again for the paint info. I reckon I'll be keeping the tires and rims for the time being until I feel comfortable spending money on new ones (read after divorce is final!). I have to get a complete top and doors first which will be awhile also. Maybe a Christmas present to myself I drive by your way every so often also as the main office for the work I do is in Fayetteville NC. If I ever get rid of the rims, I'll drop you a line. Also, I still do work out at the 75th Ranger Regiment at Fort Benning 3-4 times a month. I may know your cousin as that's the unit I was in when I retired from the military.

47redwillys, pretty sure I ordered the black diamond plate rocker panels from Quadratec.

Anyway, here's an update pic of the project. My next fix will be replacing the external voltage regulator as the battery overcharges at anything above idle.

Looks good!

Did you clear it or no? How is the paint holding up?

Thanks. I didn't clear it so it really is a flat finish like mil spec vehicles. Paint's holding up fine but I really haven't run it on the trails much yet. That should change come mid September when bow season comes in! I've got a case of extra paint for touch up which should last for years to come.
