poor brakes

My CJ 7 has poor brakes, drums on the rear and disc on front. Found that the rear wheel cylinders were locked up. So I replaced them. Bleed all four wheels got good flow on all four ,so no blockage in lines. But still has poor stopping power. All four wheels have new pads and linings. Any suggestions on what else it might be or what to check. Thanks in advance

might be nothing depends on year. If you dont have power assited breaks your breaks will suck. Did you bleed them correctly? from furtherest to closest point. Did you do the work yourself on replacing them besides the bleeding? if not take them back and say they arent working correctly. A bit more info on how they feel would also help.

It is a 1983 CJ 7 and yes we bleed them from the furtherest one to the closest. Yes it has a power booster, which has good vacume, The pedal feels hard but just dosen't want to stop. You would have to stand on the pedal with both feet to get it to slide in my gravel driveway.

Check your front calipers to see if the pistons are stuck. If your rear weel cyl. werestuck thier may have been water in the system. Also replace your madter cyl. if you find them stuck.

I have had both power and manual brakes on similar rigs. I was able to lock up the manual brakes, but nearly never able to lock up the power brakes. As I understand it, AMC altered the pivot location from manual to power (where the brake arm attaches to the pedal). There is a company that makes adjustable brake arms that allow you to change this pivot location...you may want to try this.

Many have benefited from using a YJ power booster (dual diaphragm).

According to AutoZone, there is a dual diaphragm booster available for the CJ ($100). This would greatly increase stopping power.

From your description, you have a bad booster. Replace it and you'll be much better off, but still have stock brakes. The newer duel diaphram systems make a huge difference. Check out the Navaho from Off Again or the Vanco system, great stuff for the $$$.
