A Pleasent Surprise

Went to go get my CJ inspected yesterday and passed, no surprise there.
The surprise was my NYS inspection fee was only $10 instead of $21
I get discounted inspection because shes 25 years old now!

In California, if it's 25 or more years old the EPA wants you to scrap it. I got a letter saying the'll give me $680. to do so, but only if it's running and can pass smog. I don't think so!

Only a couple more years and I'm exempt from state inspections in my 76 CJ-7 (35 years+ don't require annual inspections in NC.)

If it runs and passes smog why would they want you to scrap it?

I'm thinking the reverse, if theyre going to scrap it, why would it need to pass smog?

CA probably figures if the owner is willing to spend enough on it so that it will pass a smog test, it's probably going to be driven. As it should! They consider it a big enough polluter that it's worth paying to take it off the street. Even if they can't balance the state budget, they've got money to buy old vehicles. Just think what you could buy for that $680.

Another thing, it's a '71 so it's smog exempt, that's why I bought it. But $680. sounds real tempting, being as how I've got $14,000 into it.

They want to TAX you. They get sales tax on a new car, and the yearly registration tax is based on value, which is based on age.

It all about the money.
