Please Help A Newbie-emission/vacuum Routing

So I am getting ready to untangle the nest of vacuum lines and hoses. I have found a different info on set-ups. I am focusing on these systems.
Background:

Location: Richmond VA and there are no emission testing requirements.
AMC 4.2L 258
Single Barrel Carter
Motorcraft Distributor with vaccum Advance

NEED INPUT IF THEY ARE SET UP RIGHT

This has been asked before, but all the info doesn’t apply directly to what I have.

I got diagrams from http://www.jedi.com/obiwan/jeep/misc/vacuumhoses.html

but they don’t state where they all end. I tried to follow the Haynes Manual, but it is not very clear.

PCV-
Manifold Vacuum Port (Above the EGR Valve) directly to the PCV Valve
Missing a delay valve in the current set-up. I don't have any connections on my air breather and there is only a filter at the back

EGRa. EGR CTO Valve (two connection points driver side of motor, closest to the radiator) outer port (furthest from engine) to EGR Valve. There is no TVS on the current set up. (TVS in the Haynes manual.)

b. EGR CTO Inner Port to Carburetor EGR Port. (Current Set-up-This line goes to no-where)

Vacuum Advanced Modulating System
Spark CTO Switch- (three connection points driver side of motor, closest to the firewall of engine compartment)
Inner Port (closest to Engine)—Solenoid Vacuum Valve (Currently not there—no evidence of the necessary wiring either, do I need it [Haynes Manual])—Manifold Vacuum Port

Outer Port—Tees into line after Solenoid Vacuum Valve-Both connect to Manifold Vacuum Port

Middle Port- Connects to Distributor Vacuum Advance
Please Help a Newbie out!!!! Feedback, Advice, Further Guidance

This site has some of the best diagrams for sorting this all out. I used it when I stripped down my vac system. Ignore the computer related crap. All I have on mine is a 5-port CTO, PCV, EGR and vapor canister. I may have a pic of my setup with my MC2100 carb.

I appreciate the quick feedback, but I have looked at all the diagrams I can find. I can't seem to make heads or tails of the whole thing. These links are great, but for a mid 80's CJ. I have seen routing suggestions from Mike Romain, but I don't believe they were for the same vintage jeep/engine. Everything is close, but not clear.

I am doing the best I can with a manual and LITTLE knowledge. What I really want to know--Is the Routing Right, if not What's wrong--What parts (solenoids, valves) etc are essential.

To eliminate any misunderstandings post some pics of each side of carb, engine, etc.........whatever you have questions about.....Otherwise the alternative is a diagram above that shows how it was done per factory....

The sprynet link was my sole source for reference on my 1984 CJ7 with I4 150. His diagrams, pictures and information were very accurate for me and helped solve countless questions.

That the problem, for the mid 80's it is great. For my 1980, and I'm sure the 78, its a bit tough. Original Poster -If you are relatively sure the 80 has the same routing I'll try to scan in my stuff - just let me know.

Yeah, sorry.... for some reason I thought this was an 80's CJ.

See if these 76-79 diagrams help you at least with where things terminate. Unfortunately I won't be any help with what you need and what can go.

If you are exempt from emissions, have you looked into the nutter bypass? It eliminates that mess of vacuum lines and a lot of usually broken anyway, electrical garbage.

That's a mid 80's item for computer controlled Carbs I beleive. Great option for newer CJs!

Whittle--If you have can send some scans my way that will be great!!! It's the closest thing I could find, that would work.

Merlina--The Nutter's doesn't really apply here since I'm not dealing with a BBD with computer control

PWA--Thanks for the link and the response.

I would think, someone has either run into this problem or has a set-up in their Late Model CJ who could help. I'll take anything at this point.

I'll see if the scanner still works tonight.

I think if you follow the Nutter bypass thread directions for the basic vacuum line routing, you will be good to go. I have a 78 engine in my 86 and have just the basics needed to pass emissions and make a good runner.

Where does the charcoal canister hook to on your 78? Is it a PCV line one with a purge valve on it, or is is a constant purge type that uses the rim of the carb or the air filter nipple for suction? Basically does it look like this one on Dale's site or not? http://home.sprynet.com/~dale02/evaporat.htm

Here is a link to the Nutter thread which puts a later 258 into the configuration you want for your 78:

oh yeah you're right. I didn't realize he didn't have the computer controlled card. That was one of the best things I did to my '86.

Mike,

Yep, that is my canister, It is located against the firewall, under the windshield wiper fluid res. I will have to double check but I am pretty sure it is set-up the same way.

Then the basic setup in that Nutter thread will work very well for you.

The setup you have now with the mixer for the distributor can be figured out and set back all stock, but you are missing parts so unless you can locate all them, I would go the simpler route.

Oh, you don't need the sol-vac unit usually, it is supposed to be for automatics and AC engines, but have heard of it being active on a few others.
