Pic of our new Jeeps!
Just bought my first Jeep on Monday.
Here is a pic of it next to my son's Jeep. It is a 1984 CJ-7. Today I did the first repair: replaced the valve cover gasket. Next project is trying to make sense of all the vacuum lines and wires under the hood. Then...?

Welcome to the Club
My suggestion on the vac lines is to get rid of them and just run a catalytic converter and EGR valve. The rest are just in the way. And go thru the harness, jeep used Duct tape to cover some connections. This is how mine caught on fire 9 years ago, you don't want this, rebuilding them from that was expensive. If you need parts, send me a forum message, I have lots left over from my rebuild years ago, still in the attic. Many parts were new that came off another jeep that went injected, then some of my old ones mixed in.
You can add a weber in non-emission test areas or just goto a howell TBI or similar injection system. Should be a vac diagram on a sticker on the grill top about where you would check your radiator. It will be on the painted surface, if it's not painted over. If you live in emission zone like mine, they just sniff test it, and if you pass, they don't look under the hood. which means for all intent and purposes, you could have a jet engine under the hood as long as it smogs as clean as the stock motor. This is usually accomplished only by means of a well tuned carb and a catalytic converter that is working properly. I see your son has a plastic jeep, must be a YJ...haha, inside joke, you'll understand soon. jeepmor |

Nice jeep. I can't tell from the picture, but does it have a spare tire rack? If not I have the original from my '83 with backing plates and all. I also have the exact same wheel as you have. (I had five but after looking at them in the garage for a while I made neet shop stools out of four of them). That would give you a matching spare. Also have the original running boards (in caribean blue) they are just little drop down steps about 16" long instead of full length. PM me on this board if interested and we can work something out. Otherwise, welcome to the club.

Thanks for the warm welcome everybody.
Jeepmor: I definately want to eliminate most of the vac. crap. No emissions check where I live, so no worries there. I just don't know what I need and what I don't. I also have to figure out how to put the air cleaner back on. The PO had a new Carter Carb put in but they never reinstalled the air cleaner. Sounds simple, but the problem is the studs that hold the air cleaner housing to the carb and to the valve cover are missing. Anyone know where I can get those?? John C: I don't have a spare OR a rack to carry one on. ..sent you a PM. |

Hi... welcome! Nice CJ7. I like the color. I'm thinking about shooting my wife's CJ in a similar blue to contrast my CJ5 (Sublime Green).

Good looking CJ. One bit of info though, you are going to hate those steps on the side. Talk about hanging up.

That's a clean jeep you've got there--congrats on the purchase! Since you said there's no emission testing, read and implement the following link--it will help you clean out all kinds of junk from under the hood:
http://www.off-road.com/jeep/jnutter1.htm To do it right, put a weber carb on there and you can really simplify things. It's been over a year since I bought my last weber, but I found the best deal at www.carbs.net if you're interested. There's lots of information on here, and some simple modifications will sure make tasks as basic as changing a valve cover gasket a whole lot easier when you don't have to remove 10' of vacuum lines first. EDIT: Actually my better Weber deal came from www.collinsbrosjeep.com but you may be able to do better.

Thanks everyone for the nice comments. I think the photo came out nice - the Jeep looks better the farther away you get from it. lol
Jeepbeeper: I gave $99 for one Jeep, $3500 for the other. See this thread: http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f8/potential-cj-owner-need-advice-93477/ Sorry, they are not for sale. Johnyli: Thanks for the link. Is that the infamous "nutter bypass" I've been hearing about? |

Yeah, Jeepjedi--that's the bypass. The actual procedure of splicing the wires is 10x easier than unwrapping the wiring looms and tracing back all of the now-unnecessary wires so that they can be removed (if you want to really clean things up under the hood). You will be amazed how much of that mess can come out--I would say 75% conservatively. In fact, it's rather unnerving to see the pile of it on the ground when you're all done. Do your research, though, to understand what you're removing because you can really screw things up if you just chop away. I can't say anything about Haynes, but I have always been very pleased with my Chilton's manual, and it has a good write-up on all of the emission-related parts to determine what is necessary or not.
Good luck
