PCV valve and PCV filter on my V8?

I've gone through and caught up the general maintenance on the '77 Cj I bought. It has an AMC 360 V8. Haynes is showing a PCV valve and PCV filter. I can see leftover parts of what looks like a foam filter that went up into the oil filler cap, but when I asked about the part at the parts store, I got that far off stare. Also, does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to remove the pcv valve? It shows to just pull it out by the hose, but when I do that, it comes out about 1/2" then stops. I don't want to pull on it to much and break something off.
