Compression numbers. Did not expect #1 to be lower than the others. I started at 6 and worked my way forward. The FSM says 120-150 psi. Should I be concerned my numbers are way above that? The block was bored. I ordered a leak down tester, should be here end of the week. Thay should tell me if it is leaking past the rings or valves. If it does not leak anywhere with that test I guess it is safe to assume oil is getting past the seals? The head had a 3-angle valve job.

1 - 185
2 - 190
3 - 195
4 - 190
5 - 190
6 - 195

Could it be that the rings just aren't seated yet Paul?

I agree. Just give it some time for the rings to properly seat beofe you start tearing the engine back down. Just finish the jeep and put a couple hundred miles on the engine. although, It depends upon how much oil is actually being consumed.

Paul, I believe the compression is fine, the lowest and highest cylinders are within 5% and then engine is not even broke-in yet.

Kinda leaning this way.

Yeah, the FSM says variance less than 30 psi between cylinders. No concern they are well above 150 psi?

Yes I think I would leave it alone for now and assume that the rings haven't seated yet, or could the gaps on the rings mysteriously lined up?

I was very meticulous when I installed the rings to ensure the correct face up and staggering the ring lands per the FSM. But I guess anything is possible. I have just about convinced myself to push it aside and continue the build until I can put some miles on it.

Paul my cousin worked in a machine shop for years and he told me they sometimes had trouble with rings seating. It was mainly because they weren't honed good enough after they were bored. It seems even with good material, ie. cast iron block, steel rings and hardened vavle seats, they can still vary and not all areas may wear in and seat at the same time. I'm going to give my cousin a call this week and I'll run your deal by him.

Don't push the engine aside comepletely Paul. I'd still start it up and let it run long enough to get it all up to temperature. The enemy of allof of engines that sit is moisture inside. Starting it on a regular basis will keep that at bay. I wouldn't be all that concerned right yet with the oil in the chambers either, so what if it fouls the plugs a bit.

Thanks guys! I think I will do the leak down test on it since it is easy and should give me some idea what may be going on. Then push it aside. Unfortunately, space is limited and I don't know that I can leave this set to be able to start it periodically. I need to flip the tub down and not sure I will have the room.

I'm thinking I would repeat the break-in procedure before I took apart the stand. I would DEFINITELY install it and run it the way it is. SOMETHING will change, for better or for worse, at some point. Keep moving forward.

Paul, keep in mind the primary reason for break-in is for the cam and lifters, the rings will seat as you drive and the driving should not be steady like a constant 70 as an example.

Paul,
Nice job on the start up, looks like a sweet set up, I wish my engine was running. I was wondering if you could tell me how you got your intake looking so good, it looks brand new. Thanks
