Painting CJ hard top

Does anyone know what to use to paint a CJ fibreglass hardtop. Mine looks pretty rough and I would like to giver a paint job. Do I use standard automotive paint and primer?

I changed my hardtop from black to tan with 3 or 4 cans of Krylon gloss (or semigloss-I don't remember) spray paint. It came out great and seems pretty durable so far, its only been about 9 months, but it made it through the winter in Maine.

I just painted my hard top. I used PPG DAU with low gloss additive. It is a one shot base & clear coat in one. You need to scuf the top really good with a scratch pad first, that is the way a body shop will do it.

I just had my hardtop painted too, I had to fix some minor stress cracks in gell coat with some fiberglass. then sanded it with 220 in random orbit sander. Paint shop shot a primer and then changed top from Brown to Bright White. Hate the heat here in CA. looks GREAT!!!!

I'm just going to use spray paint on mine. I'm pretty sure that's all they do at JeepsRus. I'm going to call them next week and find out for sure.

Sorry to steal this thread somewhat but I am going to paint my hardtop soon and I was wondering if you guys (or girls) had pics of hardtops painted the same color as the jeep. (orange is my color) any opinions on this?

Believe it or not, I used a quart of Rustoleum satin black and a paint roller! It looks great! I didnt want to lose that pebble coating that is in the fiberglass. I tried useing spray bombs but I kept leaving stripes so I borke out the quart and the roller!

BigJMcConnell: on painting the hard top same as body I think the new Saraha's are painted that way. It makes them look differant but I'm sure thats from them always being two tone. I think it would look okay painted that way only thin is so much orange (for my taste).

scramblin_man,

good tip on the roller paint job.....I never really thought about that. I am tending to agree with crf that an orange hard top may be too much...so I just may go with black(rolled on )
