painless wiring kit???

so I have been haveing problems with starting and I think it may be due to my wiring, I am thinking I will just get it completly rewired since there is a lot of wires that appear to not even be used, anyways how easy is the painless wire kit to put in for somewon who has very little experience doing this and if it is too coplicated how much should I expect to pay to get it rewired.
rewire my self with painless kit?
have somewon install the kit?
have somewon wire from scratch?
is painless the best way to go?
sorry if there are a lot of questions just a poor navy corpsman who doesn't want to have to repeat anything if I don't have to.

thanks
-kevin

Painless is the way to go. Fairly simple Just follow their directions. Did mine in a weekend with little help but you can always call their tech people. Keep in mind that the basic kit does not come with the computer harness and you will have to reuse some connectors off of your old harness so its wise to label everything as you take the old one out. Hope that helps

You might be money ahead to just have someone look at your existing wiring and clean up what you have. Find a shop that specialize in auto electrical, You might spend a couple of hundred for something like that. A new harness will run you around $400.00 or more and thats just the harness you still have to put it in. just my 2 cents.

I think EZ Wire is the way to go if you're going to get a kit. They print the circuit ID on every wire spaced out every 5" or so. 'Bout half the cost of Painless. I am a poor AT2, and I did it. I'm pretty sure you could find an ET or AT on base willing to help you out for beer money. Paying someone to rewire a whole jeep is going to be big $$$.

I'm with jayhawk, I have used a couple of EZ harnesses and have had no problems.

If you could find someone to help out it should only take about a weekend.

if you want to replace the loom, that's fine, however, I'd be interested in knowing what the starting problem was. If it isn't wiring related, you are going to be a bit disappointed to find it is still there after you install the loom.

This is somewhat related so it is not a complete hijack but:

I too am looking to possibly bite the bullet and do a complete rewire. I have looked at kits from painless, ezwiring, and www.hotrodwires.com. The EZ wiring mini20 seems like the way to go at $130, but I can't tell from their (super crappy) website if it comes with everything that the painless kit does. For instance, I can't tell if it comes with some sort of bukhead connector, or if it just has a fuse box. Has anyone ever installed the EZ wiring kits?

Also, FWIW, if you do purchase a kit from EZ wiring, I would still have a real nice look at (and possibly print out and use) the wiring instructions that are hosted on Painless' website at: http://www.painlesswiring.com/Manuals/90504Manual.pdf
It seems to be extremely well written and is so detailed, it almost has me thinking that this job will be a gigantic PITA.

I have installed a couple of the EZ Wiring harnesses. They are very easy if you have any experience in wiring. All wires are marked every 5 inches.

This is how I did the bulkhead on my CJ6. I messed up a little by not getting the wires totaly tight before adding the splitloom. That is why it starts an inch after the firewall.

I had one of the mini harnesses and did not like it as much as the fullsize. There is a guy on ebay selling the fullsize for about $150. I have bought one harness from him and had no problems, the harness was drop shipped direct from EZ.

What is the difference? Just smaller fuses?

The fuse block is smaller on the mini harness and it uses the mini fuses. I didn't like the way that it mounted and it was hard to tell which fuse was which. The fuse block was not labeled, the fuse layout was in the cover.

The mini would be great for a car that had limited space. I got one to rewire a Triumph that had a very small dashboard.
