Bad weather here in SoCal has limited me to work in the garage and shop. I started the shock upgrade and built all the hoops and mounts for the project. I will probably end up with fox non-res 2.0 shocks in the 11" travel flavor.

X2!

If/when he ever sells this CJ, the new owner certainly will never blame anything on the previous owner.

Everything is top-notch, high quality, well executed and thought out for sure!

Thanks guys for the kind words and posts!

I have opened a can of worms here. A fellow JF member sold me some 2.0 fox smoothies in 12" travel. I had built the first hoops for 11", the extra inch netted a 2" longer distance between mounts. I am rebuilding them now. All of it. So, I have an extra set of hoops if anyone needs a pair.

The fox shocks have a .5" heim for a mount, a bit small to go single shear I think, plus the fact that the mount is anodized aluminum, not very rock proof. So, I am building up my leaf skids to contain and mount the shock in a double shear. So, you might say top to bottom now. It is really eating into the wheeling time. I was hoping to get out this weekend!!! I have her up on blocks and jackstands for the weekend, I need to get the leaf plates done, blasted and painted in order to get off the blocks and back in the container till I get some time to finish the top mounts.

pic of the leaf plate/skids and old mount for shock:

Used a thin cutting wheel to get the old stud out:

Drew up six pieces for the project:

I will re-cut two of the pieces into one piece after looking it over closer, will make the outside part of the mount better protected and provide a bit of a ramp/skid for the rocks.

Have a great weekend!

your fabricating skills make me want to go out and find me a cj5 just to make a trail rig, but that wouldnt be fair to my willys. Great work and detail on your shock mounts. Now that I got more use to welding, watch out future cj whom I dont own yet.

I was looking at your welds, they look good. The penetration looks like a winner, 220v rocks!

I got some more work done this afternoon. Paint is still drying right now, tomorrow I will get the spring plates back on. The whole shock project has been "a step at a time" kinda thing. After looking close tonight, I will probably need to trim the inner fender to make room for the higher hoop, another time adding project. It will be worth it though. Looking forward to some rock climbing soon!

New shock hoop stands, much more compact:

New hoops and upper tabs, shorter and wider, mucho better:

assembled both ends:

and the actual shocks, got em from a fellow JF member for a good deal. I was not going to do reservoir, but the price was right!:

Haven't had a bunch of time this weekend. We did a MDA muscle walk in Irvine Saturday, church, a jumper B-day party and the L.A. Irish fest today. I'm beat. Did get small steps done. The Jeep is back on four legs and the lower mounts came out better than I had hoped. The upper mounts are bent, fabbed and welded but not welded to the frame yet. I will need to cut some of the inner fender to make room for the hoop and reservoir line.

I am going to mount the res inside for protection. Any thoughts on this? I see the huge lifted show/street trucks with the res's mounted next to the shock, but mine will likely see hazard duty, so I think out of harms way, but, is there a reason they are outside?

Bead blasted , etch primed and coated semi-gloss black:

New hoops and frame mounts:

Leaf plates/skids mounted back up:

The shock project is moving along, just need more time. Today is Our 25th anniversary! Seems like just yesterday we were getting married. Been fun!

OK, shock project update:

Used my 24v readywelder to "simulate" a trail repair. This puppy works awesome. lays down some wire with fair precision at any speed. I used only the gear in the case, auto goggle, sleeves, mask and hat. Felt comfortable, just not production protection.

A little paint and cut some small bushings and it's done. I managed 6" up and 6" down travel, smack in the middle. Had to cut some fenderwell and reline it with edging, looks semi-pro LOL

Now it's down to the reservoir mount. I'll get it out and check flex with the forklift. Should be able to get a few inches I hope.

fresh paint, still wet, dried to a semi gloss:

Got it all buttoned up. Now I need some longer brake lines! I figure I gained three inches of travel already without changing brake lines. I could get some more if I went with tube fenders or cut the stock fenders.
