I have a 78 with 3.54 and a 75 with 3.73, both are 3 speeds. The automatic will make some difference. The 3.54s are fine out on the road and light off roading. I do have to up shift more on hills in the 78 and the 3.73s seem way better off road. I can lock the 75 in, put it in 1st gear and it crawls way better, but the t14 transmission in it does have a lower 1st gear also. I personally like the 3.73 better for the roads I travel most on, but I think you are going to be like WOW with either one compared to the 2.73. The carrier would make a difference for me too, but then again I can be a tightwad!

Lol. After I posted, I noticed. With the auto 3.54 will be fine though I would still want 3.73, but it comes down to what others say.

You didn't get what you ordered.
Now you are second guessing yourself because of another persons failure.

No, I didn't get what I ordered.
But I'm not second-guessing myself; I've been presented with a situation and I'm deciding how to deal with it. The decision to get the 3.73 was based on the opinions of others, not from some deep desire to have that particular ratio.

As someone has pointed out, I'll have to change the front to match the rear, and I didn't realize that a 3.73 up front would require a new carrier for the Dana 30.

Sticking with the 3.73 at this point would add the cost of shipping to return the 3.54 plus the shipping for the replacement 3.73. Then add the cost of buying a new Dana 30 carrier, plus the parts and labor to install it and that's probably an additional $200 over just going with the 3.54 instead.

The 3.54 mistake is starting to look more like a lucky break.

DING, DING, DING - We have a winner! If original, you should have a TF999 auto tranny. It has a respectable 2.74 first gear (as opposed to 2.4x for most autos used in Jeeps) to help with the off roading. As mentioned by bradleybrb above, you will notice a difference over the 2.72's.

Follow up and let us know how it worked.

Good Luck

I agree with the 4.10's after DD mine past several days and just now getting back from 3 hours on single track logging roads iin the mountains.
At idle my 3.54 is to fast in 2H especially with water bars across the road.
I feel it's also to fast in city traffic.

I'd stick with the 3.54's. With no OD on that TF999, 3.73 will be a little much. You live in Memphis, which means MUD, not rocks, so no rock crawling, and since you're only running 31's I think you'll be good.

I'm running 31's with 3.31's and think they're fine. The other Jeep I have 2.73's and 31's and it leaves a little to be desired. I think 3.54's would be perfect around here for 31's.

I don't think you'd go wrong with the 3.54. That is what mine has, and with the T150 and the T177 I like it's performance. Your use description sounds like mine - I DD it, with some trails at an off-road park every month or so, and I use it for yard work when needed as I also pull a M716 behind it at least once a week and it handles that fine. The trailer can be loaded with anything from light brush to a load of green firewood, and it has no problem pulling it on the road. I think the 3.54 is a good all-around ratio.

In 4th on the highway I am around 3k at 70...

Re-read the first post. Mostly on-road with a little dirt/mud and farm roads during hunting season. No mountains, no single-track logging roads around here. Not getting out on the interstate with anything starting in 4.

ETA: But the calibers of my handguns all start with .4
