Omix-Ada steering box?

Hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone has bought the Omix-Ada 18001.01 steering box below for a manual steering system. If so, could you please provide a short review? Would you buy again?

http://www.thejeephut.com/steering-g...j-by-omix-ada/

I have read everywhere that Omix makes really shady parts but I would really like a like new steering box to take out the 5 inches or so of play in my steering wheel.

Does any other brand make a steering box? I have searched the web, this is all I have found...

And yes, I know the steering box is my issue and not any other front end parts. Not interested in a H1 steering box and making modifications. Already tried adjusting set screw on my current steering box and no the mount is not loose or broken.

Thanks!

Well, I believe Crown has one. Part No: 994508R

No idea about the quality of either one. I've only dealt with power steering.

No wait, that is the wrong year.

(Edit: I think J0994509 would be the Crown equivalent to Omix's 18001.01.)

I have a 78 CJ5. Power steering conversion would be nice. But a little more work than I'm looking for.

I am also curious about the box. I need to change mine out as mine is getting to where it binds just a little once in a while. If i give me wheel a good tug it will unbind and go back to working like normal. I have an 82 that was the california edition so it has a serpentine belt and the air pump. Changing it over to power steering would not be an easy task.

I think I would avoid OMIX for an important component such as a steering gear. Check out these guys. http://www.larescorp.com/ Rockauto sells their manual steering gear. I was going to purchase one but could never find one in stock. Ended up going with a Hummer H1 PS gear (but I have PS). They are reman in the USA. OMIX will most likely be from China.

I got THREE of them from 4Wheel Parts, pretty sure they were Crown or Omix (reman). When I finally got one that worked OK, it leaked oil. I decided to just live with it. Still rankles me, though.

Does anybody buy parts from their local parts stores anymore?

When Crown and Omix are the choices from the mail order joints it's time to think about NAPA/Carquest/etc..

That's why I went with a Lares J10 steering box from Advance Auto. They are $96. Spend $4 more and go over $100, and you can use discount code TRT41 for $40 off orders over $100 for a grand total of $60. Free shipping on orders over $75 also.

To be totally honest, it never crossed my mind once to go to a Napa or any auto local auto store. Sad huh?
