Ok...trans swap question.

Ok, I currently have an '83 CJ7 that the trans blew on me twice in the last year and a half now. The only thing that wasn't replaced when the shop built it was the case and the shifter (supposedly).

Anyway, my questions are as follows. I came across a '79 with the I6 and a four speed (assuming the T18 which were the option), how hard would it be to just remove the trans and t-case from the one and swap?

The other reason I am even entertaining this is because I can use a bunch of parts off of the donor Jeep for my CJ5 project I have going on.

You'll love the T-18. It shifts like a truck (it's a truck transmssion), but that granny low 1st gear is really nice, and you'll never break it with a 258. Mine is out of a J-truck and it's a beautiful thing. The downside for you would be swapping in a Dana 20 transfer case in lieu of your Dana 300. You could adapt the 300 to the T-18 with a little research and money. The D20 is not a bad transfer case, but your 300 is better. Driveshaft lengths may have to be adjusted.

I'm not against swapping the t-case I have now seeing as it doesn't work. I am probably the only person with a one wheel drive Jeep when I have it in four low.

No so fast you can run a 1980 Scout Dana 300. The Only Dana 300 that bolts up to a T18. You will need the bull gear from a T19
